Dad left the room with Mel, and there was no way I would not let them have a conversation about me alone. I followed them downstairs and took a seat on the step while she sat on the couch.

"So, explain to me what happened," Dad said to her. Mel looked around nervously, then Dad barked, "Eyes up here, sweetheart." His harshness to his tone made her jump in her seat and stared at him wide-eyed.

"Liam walked me home last night. I was on my way up to my dorm room when I forgot something. I went back downstairs. I found him on the ground, bloody and beaten. I grabbed his phone, and since he locked the phone, the name Dylan popped up on his screen. So I hit it, but it did nothing, so I hit it repeatedly," Mel explained.

"What is with these girls constantly having to press the alarm button?" Frazier asked. Dad shot him a look, and he shrugged.

"Go on," Dad demanded.

"Since I couldn't get anyone, I dragged Liam to the building and pressed several buttons until two people came down to help me take him up to my room. When I was cleaning him up, that's when his phone rang, and I answered it. A while later, you two showed up," Mel said.

"Really? That's your story?" Dad asked, disbelieving Mel.

"It's not a story. It's the truth," Mel said, looking up at him.

"I find it convenient that my son takes home a girl who dated the guy that did this to him. The same guy shows up when he knew Liam would be alone," Dad replied, doubting Mel's versions of the previous night's events.

She stood up. "Are you accusing me of setting up Liam?" Mel questioned.

"I find it strange that you seem to have this fascination with my son, then the minute he lets his guard down this happens," Dad accused Mel.

"Mr. Shaw! I would do nothing to hurt Liam! I care too much about him," Mel yelled back.

"Then what did you forget the night you found him?" Dad asked.

"What?" Mel asked.

"You said you forgot something. What was it?" Dad questioned.

"I forgot my mail," Mel whispered.

"What was that? I didn't quite hear you!" Dad barked.

"I forgot my mail. I usually check it once a week. I forgot to check it before going up to my dorm room," Mel said, fiddling with her fingers.

Dad stood there, glaring at her. "Bullshit!"

"What?" She asked, her head snapping up.

"That's bullshit, and you know it. Give me your phone now!" Dad demanded, holding out his hand.

"What? Why?" Mel asked, confused with his demand.

"Jordan, don't you think this is going a bit too far?" Frazier asked.

"Stay out of it, Dylan! Phone now!" Dad ordered.

Mel pulled out her phone and unlocked it, then handed it over to him. He scrolled through it, then handed it back to her.

"Satisfied now? Did you honestly think I would set Liam up? You know what, never mind because, in your mind, I'm already guilty even though Gage put me in the hospital when he spiked my drink. I'm not a Shaw, Jones, or Frazier, so who cares about the girl that tried to help because she liked Liam. You know what, Mr. Shaw? You're an asshole, and you can fuck off," Mel announced, grabbing her bag, shoving her phone, and then storming to the door.

She turned to me, "I am sorry, Liam. I guess it never meant us to be together." With that, Mel left.

I got up and hobbled to the door when Dad stopped me, "Liam?"
