Surprises and then some

Yeah, our parents noticed we vanished and got our asses handed to us. It was worth it, though. The look on her face when I gave her the gift would be worth it.

We all worked quickly, and the big day arrived for Junior and Hope. It helped when you got an enormous family to throw together a quickie wedding. The wedding was like most weddings, kind of boring. Each person says some lovey-dovey crap and the women cry, while the men sit there trying not to fall asleep. Okay, scratch that, weddings are ridiculously overpriced, over-hyped bullshit so that people can brag about their "big" day.

I could do without all that. As long as there was food, that's all that matters. After the wedding, we moved to the tent for the reception. Since we are an enormous family as it is, it didn't take long to fill it up.

Junior and Hope had their first dance as husband and wife, and eventually, everyone joined the cheerful couple on the floor. That was going to be my chance to surprise Mel. Usually, I'm calm and collective, but at this moment, I was a nervous wreck. I know she would say yes, but it still didn't stop my nerves from going crazy.

I held her in my arms, and as we swayed back and forth. I thought about everything from the beginning. From our first kiss to her persistence pursuit of me, to that awful night and the other times, she was there for me. We sure have been through a lot together.

She looked up at me. "Liam? Is everything okay?"

"Huh? What? Oh yeah," I said, blowing air between my lips.

As we danced, someone over the loudspeaker said something, "Folks, sorry to interrupt your dancing, but someone has something he wants to ask. Liam."

We looked over to see RJ standing there with the microphone. He walked over to us and handed me the microphone as everyone watched. I took it, then reached into my pocket, pulling out a small black velvet box. Her eyes widened as I got down on one knee. "Melinda, from the time I first met you, I had a feeling you would be a royal pain in the ass."

That made people laugh, and her giggle as I shrugged.

"Our son, the romantic," dad said.

"Mmm," mom said in agreement.

Then I continued, "But then as I got to know you with every tackle, I realized not having you was worse than having you around. We've been through a lot, and the night I thought I would never see you smile, laugh, or that sparkle in your eye. It broke my heart. It was at that moment, I loved those things about you and cherished them. I am making this promise to you that no matter how boring a wedding maybe, I would suffer through any boring wedding as long as one day you will say yes when I replace this ring with a wedding ring. Mel, will you accept my promise ring?"

She looked at it and everyone as they all smiled and took the mic from me. "Only if you promise to make sure we have fantastic food at said wedding."

People laughed as I stood up and crashed my lips into hers. That's my girl. She handed the microphone off, and I placed the promise ring on her finger.

"I love you, baby," I said, and she smiled.

"Liam, I need to talk to you alone," she said as she took my hand and led me out of the tent.

I stood there as she had a worried look on her face. "Mel, what's wrong?"

"Liam, do you want kids?" Mel asked me.

Okay, this question came out of the left field. Please, dear God, don't tell me she's pregnant.

"You're not pregnant, are you?" I asked.

"No," she mumbled, then tears fell from her eyes.

"Then what's wrong?" I questioned.

She looked at me, crying. "I can't have kids."
