Genesis woke up from yet another nightmare after she had recklessly forgotten to take her medication again last night. Her mind had been a whirlpool of thoughts as she tried to come up with a way to resolve the damage Carter had brought about in this new life of hers.
She raked her hands through her hair, her fingers becoming tangled between the knots - typical. Between her kinky hair and poor eyesight – she had no shortage of annoyances to take care of every morning.
Genesis conducted a brief workout seeing as she needed to remain in shape, before having a bath and pressing her hair. She was to meet Audrey outside the Abraço Cafe at two o'clock, which meant she had three hours to pass which she intended on spending on the sofa with Prison Break on the TV and a fluffy bundle of soft grey fur on her lap.
Two Lincoln Burrow's later, her phone began to buzz and she picked it up from the coffee table to see that Damon was calling. Genesis's eyes widened. What did he want, she thought? She hadn't spoken to anyone since she left the club last night, he more than likely had a lot of questions.
"Genesis speaking." She said, her voice appeared collected and resolute - a complete contrast of how she was actually feeling at that Moment.
"Hey, it's Damon. How are you doing?" The deep, inviting voice that irksomely made the hairs on her arms rise every time she heard it rang out.
"I'm fine, thank you for asking."
"Are you sure?" He pressed, she had no idea why he'd be so adamant that something was wrong.
"Positive. Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well I figured you might be upset after what went down last night. I guess I misjudged you. My apologies." Damon said, his tone sounding a little bitter. Genesis had a feeling that his misjudgement of her had less to do with her being supposedly upset, and more about her character.
"Damon, we're not children. I can tell when something is bothering you. Whatever you need to say, just get it off of your chest, I won't be upset." Genesis reassured. She bit her lip anxiously, hoping she didn't make matters worse by saying that. She realised it was also the first time she had called him by his first name.
"Alright. Well, I just don't feel like you're the most trustworthy of people. I admit I find you incredibly attractive, you're one of the ingenuously funniest people I've met and I think you're amazingly intelligent, but all of that means nothing if I have to second-guess every word you say and move you make."
Genesis felt a twinge in her chest, she didn't know if it was anger, guilt, fear? She had tried to distance herself from Damon in order to execute her plans without any distractions, but she now saw she had ended up pushing him away completely. He didn't say that they'd never speak again, but there was no point in talking to him if he didn't believe her anyway. Perhaps how things concluded with Carter was a sign that relationships just weren't meant for her. She should have never let herself get involved with him.
Genesis composed herself, her voice remaining strong despite her wanting to break down. A skill that took years of trial and error to perfect. It was always easier over the phone.
"I completely understand, Mr Soldati. There's absolutely no need to explain yourself, it's not as if there was anything between us. You are my best friend's lover and the best friend of my brother-in-law. Nothing more and nothing less so let's leave it at that, shall we? I will leave you to live your life, and I'll see you whenever." She ended the call before letting an incoherent sound escape her lips and throwing her phone across the room. Whatever it was they briefly shared had barely even begun before it was terminated.
