The Wake of the Storm

By your simple act of kindness,
You spared me from the storm;
Sheltered me from shards of glass
That reopened wounds from my past.
And by this simple gesture,
Allowed me to see
How cruel and unfeeling
A teenager can be.

By your simple act of kindness,
You brought me back to life;
I'm purged of the monsoon rains
That threatened to drown me in my pain.
And by this simple gesture,
Allowed me to see
The value of the human heart
And fragility of feelings.

Before my hour of relief,
I soaked in my anxieties,
Dwelling on calamities
And saltwater sorrow seas.
Yet still, you were considerate,
Spelling it out in silver,
Granting second chances
With a seal of shaking hands.

Before my reawakening,
I sulked in self-loathing,
Cursing the sun for shining
And blindfolded,
Swung my double-edged knife.
But upon your words
That shattered stone,
I demanded myself
To rebuild my golden throne.

By your simple act of kindness,
You saved me from within;
My sight regained it's color
And my imagination now sings.
And by this simple gesture,
I offer my apologies
To everyone I've ever wronged
So heartlessly.

I promise I will change
To save what I left;
To salvage and preserve
My human relationships.
