Chapter 17: Headlines News

Brenda went down from Ruben's Harley feeling like a mess. She wanted to scream and cried. She hated the feeling. Renata and Nathaniel are officially together, she slept in his house! Brenda grabbed a bag of Nachos and went straight to the backyard. When she was feeling angry, Brook and she had the routine of shooting dart gun onto the aiming board, sometimes they would place a picture of the people they hate on it. She remembered the first picture stuck there was Paulina Suarez, Brook's first Brazilian girlfriend who had broken up with him when he was in 10th grade.

Shoving a palm of nachos into her mouth, she shot the gun onto the aiming board. "I hate you!" She screamed.

A minute later, she realized that Ruben has been eyeing her. He walked into the backyard with a piece of Tiramisu cake on his hand, he gave her his usual cynical smile. "Broken heart?" He asked her.

"No." Brenda exclaimed and shoot another arrow onto the board.

"Here, grab some Tiramisu."

Brenda hesitated although she loves Tiramisu. "Where did you get this?"

"The bakery at the end of the road." He answered simply. "I eat so much of this when i feel hurt."

"I love Tiramisu." Brenda chugged a spoonful of melting chocolate and cream onto her mouth.

"Yeah, me too. My mum used to make Tiramisu often when i was young. Especially when i'm sick."

"Why?"

"Hypoglycemia." He answered simply.

Brenda gave him a blank look. "Uhhh... Hypopotacemia?"

"High-po-gly-cemia." He repeated. "Low blood sugar."

Brenda gave a quick nod. "Sounded dangerous."

"It was." He added. "I hate sugar, but i love Tiramisu."

"Me too!" She exclaimed. "Well but i love sugar." She added, laughing.

"Never mind about Nathan." Ruben suddenly stated.

"Nathan?" Brenda was shock. How did he know? Could she be that obvious when they saw them this morning? "Haha. No!" She faked a laugh.

"Okay." Ruben chugged another spoonful of Tiramisu into his mouth and messed her hair up before getting up. "I'm going to play Point Blank." He added. "You join?"

Hell yeah, she would. Anything is better than crying alone while shooting a dart gun. "YES!" She screamed and raced Ruben into the family room.

It had been few days since Ruben stayed over in Brenda's house. It was fun having Ruben around. Now it's not only Brenda and Brook fightings over the Nachos during Family Movie Time or fighting over Xbox. Ruben has been lightening up the house entirely. In fact, Ruben seemed like a completely different person. Although they never talk at school.

Ruben still hung out with Jaclyn and Brenda with the Greyson twin. Brenda was still wondering what is the relationship between Jaclyn and Ruben, if Jaclyn isn't Ruben's girlfriend, who was the girl that Brook mentioned on the other day? Ruben didn't seem to hangout with anybody but her. However Jaclyn said that she has been secretly dating the super-famous Troy Zolansky, she wondered if Ruben was aware of that.

Ruben has been so nice and always made sure that Brenda went to school and came home with him instead of the bus. She felt strange the first day, especially when Nathaniel and Renata caught them in shocking expression. She knows how much Nathaniel hated Ruben, but aren't they as Student Body Leaders glad that Ruben turns out to be a nice guy and was never bullying her? Especially Renata, she has always thought of Ruben positively. She should be really happy that Ruben and Brenda got along.

Strangely Renata seemed to avoid her these days, probably it was because of Nathaniel's broken arm. She tried to be with him as much as possible. They are a couple now after-all, Brenda couldn't complained.

That afternoon, Ruben, Brenda and Brook were playing Need For Speed through the Xbox console, Brenda was pouring too much Mountain Dew into her cup, that it spilled on the tea table.

"Clean it up, Bee!" Brook shouted. "Hurry up! Look at dad's newspaper! He will get angry!"

Their father enjoyed scrapbooking the old newspaper with his favorite articles on it. They have a cupboard fills with old newspaper that their father hadn't had time filtering yet. He always get cranky when he found out the newspaper he hasn't filtered went wet or torn.

Brenda got panic and hurriedly placed the newspaper away. While she was shouting and in commotion, the headline of Princeton Post caught her attention. "Too Busy for Parental Guide?" A picture of Nathaniel and Renata walked out of the silver volvo was shown on the cover.

"Bee! Cleaned up!"

"Wait!" She shouted and started reading.

It turns out that Paul Robinson has been too busy taking care of the city and not his own son. The source has confirmed that Renata Montez, a young olympiad in Violin, had admitted that she has been sleeping with Nathaniel Robinson in his own house. Could it be that Paul and Cecilia are too busy doing their own newly-wed things and disregard Parental Control at home?...

Wow. Brenda thought. She never realized how hard Renata and Nathaniel lives must be, filled with people judging them all the time just for being a couple. If it was her on the news and her parents read it, she would be in so much trouble. This is definitely a scandal.

"What are you reading?" Ruben suddenly realized how Brenda looked distracted with the newspaper in front of her.

"Nothing. Just Renata and Nathaniel, i'll go get the cloth."

Brenda walked out of the room and hurriedly wet the cloth. She thought of Renata and Nathaniel. Being the "It" couple of the city, they look happy and perfect together. Unfortunately not everyone is happy about the news, she thought.

Before entering the room with a cloth in her hand, she heard Brook and Ruben talked.

"Are you two alright?" Brook paused the game and gave Ruben attentive look. "You've liked her for ages."

"i'm fine." Ruben answered.

"Have you talked to her about this?"

"No." He tried to grab the remote from Brook and pressed the play button on the Xbox.

"You should." Brook placed his attention back onto the TV.

"She's dating a famous person now. There is nothing much to say."

It seems like Brenda's assumption was right, Ruben was also brokenhearted knowing that Jaclyn is dating the superstar Troy Zolansky. No wonder he was chugging in Tiramisu just like she did the other day. She could feel his pain. They both seemed to have been feeling the same thing.
