Chapter 19: The Date
Renata was still driving Nathaniel to school that morning. She wasn't as touchy or as flirty as she used to be during the first few days she was driving him to school. Perhaps the headlines news had taken a toll on her. It had taken a toll on him.
His dad has been blaming him for letting Renata sleeping over in Eliza's last weekend and even worse to let media and paparazzi published the story.
"You should pay those reporters!" He exclaimed to him last night. "why are you so reckless, Nate?"
Nathan was so sure that no reporters are allowed to enter Greenpeace Service Apartment. Perhaps they saw them driving in and out? Now Nathan should consider changing his car and plat number.
"No more roofless Volvo." His father added again. "Use the Camry. The glass are tinted."
When his father was not the town governor, it was all so simple. Now all things could become scandalous.
Cecilia has been keeping quiet and crying in her room ever since Ruben hasn't come home. Nathan tried to convince her that Ruben is fine and that he probably stayed with his father or new friends, but Cecilia would cry harder. When the headline news broke out, she kept on repeating how useless she is to let it all happen, let the public tarnished her husband's good reputation and to become a bad parent towards Ruben and Nathaniel.
The house turned gloomy ever since his father came back from his work travel and Ruben left. Why life is so unfair? Nathan thought. Ruben had gone but his bad luck still linger.
Renata seemed to be in hurried to go to her class that morning. Some girls have been sneering at her whenever they saw her, Nathaniel felt bad about it but there is nothing he could do. He knew there were girls who went as far as calling her an escort.
"No wonder she becomes really famous. She's been selling her body to the governor's son." Nathan could hear some cheerleader's remarks. Jaclyn's bunnies must have started them.
Before walking out of the darktinted glass Camry, Nathaniel stopped her. "I'm sorry, Rena. I really am."
Renata gave him a blank look. "It's not your fault." Her voice was as cold as ice.
"You don't have to send me to school anymore. Julio will do that for me." He added up. Renata was about to cut off and said something, but Nathan stopped her. "No. We need to calm this news down." He added. "We need to get away from each other." Nathan couldn't take the pressure he got from his father's anymore and he needs to take care of Cecilia.
Renata looked disappointed, but she nodded and said, "okay" before she left.
Nathan walked out of the Camry 15 minutes later, trying not to attract people's attention. As soon as he got out. He saw Brenda walked down from the bus. Where has Ruben gone?
Nathan walked towards Brenda with a sincere smile. "Hey, it's been sometime."
Brenda went red and started blushing as soon as he got close. "Yeah. It .. Has.." Brenda answered in stuttered.
"I saw you going to school with Ruben the other day."
"Yeah. He was staying in my place for a couple of days."
Ruben has been staying in Brenda's house for days yet there are no rumors nor publication involve. Nathaniel suddenly realized how different he was compare to his stepbrother. He wished he could be like him.
"So he stopped bullying you then?" Nathan tried to reassure Brenda.
Brenda nodded quickly but remain silent.
