School Rules #24: Everybody wears a mask, so do you.

Chapter 24

Renata stared at her reflection on the mirror, she had coloured her hair intense red earlier and curled it into place. Her brown satin dress perfectly fall on her curve and the white ribbons wrapped around it added elegant effect on her overall looks. Although she found herself looking perfect, she does not feel anywhere near perfect.

She had no choice but to go stag to this year Masquerade ball, she could have chosen to go with Nathaniel, but he told her that they need time to be apart. Thank god it's a masquerade ball. Nobody would have realized who was who under those masks.

She glanced at her phone on the table, still nothing. No Nathaniel, nor Ruben.

Silvana Montez walked into the dressing room and gave a sympathetic look on her daughter through the mirror. She came closer and smoothened the bumps on Renata curly hair.

"You look beautiful, Angel." Silvana commented and suddenly realizing the sad expression in her daughter's face, she sighed. "You miss Ruben, didn't you, miha? Why aren't you trying to call him?"

To be honest, Renata doesn't know herself. All she knows was that they had probably broken up, especially after all the ignorance she has been getting from Ruben after the headlines news. "We'd broken up." She answered rather flatly. "There is no more words to be said."

"We never know if you never tried." Silvana answered while placing a gold heart necklace from the jewelry box onto Renata.

"Mom. I don't want to wear this."

"This is a very important necklace for you, and tonight is a very important night for you too. This could be it."

Renata looked away from the mirror, she wasn't sure if tonight is that important for her anymore.

Renata stepped down from a black Camry in front of The Leighton hotel. She gave her car keys to the valet chauffeur and took a long sigh. A red carpet has already been arranged all the way from the roads to the hall and she is ready with her Venetian Colombina mask strapped onto her eyes.

The easter masquerade ball is organized by Leighton Hotel. If there is any young adult's parties involve, it would mean Jaclyn Leighton is behind it. Masquerade ball was never Ruben's setting, but she wishes tonight is an exception.

Not long after, a red Ferrari stopped and Troy Zolansky stepped down from the car. He hasn't worn his mask yet, probably wanted to make sure that everybody knows he is in the party. Everybody around started whispering. Renata herself never talk to him, she only have heard of him from Ruben. She couldn't help but wonder if he knew that she and Ruben had broken up.

Renata ignored the commotion and walked ahead onto the building, before Troy stopped her. "Hey, can you help?"

Renata turned around and looked at him strangely. Why has it got to be her?

"Can you please help me tie my mask?" Troy had a phantom mask in his hand, and gestured Renata to wear it on him.

Still keeping quiet, Renata went to Troy's back and tied the mask for him.

"Thanks." He smiled, before Renata's golden necklace caught his eyes. "Ms. Montez?" His voice asking for assurance.

"Yeah." Renata finally answered.

Troy started chuckling. "Oh, what have I done to gain such pleasure."

"I'm sorry?" Renata gave him a questioning look.

"I'm sorry. I did not mean it in that way. The news had really taken a toll on you, eh?" Renata remained silence and tried to walk away. "Don't leave. Accompany me in. I need some guide and bodyguard from girls around." He started winking at her.
