Chapter 15: Turn of Event

Renata and Nathaniel had to wake up very early that monday morning. They had to snatch a fast breakfast made by Eliza before driving straight back to Peak Hill. Renata dropped off Nathaniel and came back 30 minutes later, all clean and ready in her uniform to school. Nathaniel wished this could happen everyday. Just Nathaniel and her, although he wished he was the one behind the wheel.

"I'll drive you around until your arms get better." Renata gave Nathaniel a smile as the Volvo entered the school carpark.

"I'm fine though." He answered. "I got Julio to drive me."

"Well, Julio doesn't go to class." She answered sarcastically. "I do. So shut it." She gave him a playful bump on his leg.

"Thank you, Rena. Really."

"Your welcome." She answered and placing her hand on top of his. "You are my best friend after all." Her bright brown eyes glittered and look straight into his.

There is something more than what she said, Nathaniel could feel it. He wanted to kiss her then, but he knew it was plain wrong. Renata and Ruben are together, they love each other. What is he trying to do?

Renata just got out of the Volvo and was helping Nathaniel opening up the door, when Ruben's Harley drove into the carpark. A girl hidden in a helmet was sitting behind him.

Nathaniel glanced at Renata who turned into stone next to him. He wanted to talk to Ruben, no, he needed to talk to Ruben, but he wanted to spend as much time with Renata as possible. He didn't want Ruben ruining the moment.

The girl behind Ruben got down from the Harley and took out her helmet. Much to Nathaniel's surprise, it wasn't Jaclyn. It was Brenda. At the same time, Ruben's eyes caught Nathaniel and Renata walking together.

Renata looked speechless, but she looked away towards Nathaniel in a count of seconds. "So... Are you okay? I'll walk you to class alright?" She held Nathaniel's good hand and gestured him to follow her.

Nathaniel knew what Renata tried to do, but he was enjoying it. He was enjoying the feeling of breaking his best friend and his step-brother. A little part of him wanted to confront Renata and penetrated her protective barrier but he wonder if it was a good decision. He didn't know what happened between them, but from the look of her checking her phone every few minutes, Ruben has also been giving her his silent treatment.

After hesitating for awhile, Nathaniel tried to make a comment, wondering what Renata would respond. "What is Ruben trying to do? He ran away and come to school with Brenda. Didn't he hurt her on the first day?"

"I don't know. I don't care." Renata answered cynically. "Ruben has always been such a snob. His mean act towards her probably so that he could attract her attention." Her voice was shaking and filled with anger. "What a game he is playing."

For some reason he just knew that Ruben wasn't playing a game. But Ruben did drove to school with Brenda.

"Rena, i'm going to the washroom, alright? I'll text you after."

Nathaniel hated the feeling of guilt building up in his chest for spending time together with his stepbrother's girlfriend. However she was his best friend too, in fact, she has been his best friend for longer time than she ever dated Ruben. As Nathaniel walked away, he could see that Renata looked hurt realizing he was trying to avoid her, but she will drive him home after school anyway, it's not like Nathaniel will ever be able to avoid her for a long time.

As Nathaniel walked to the washroom, he caught a glimpse of Ruben walking out of the cafeteria. He felt the need to to explain why Renata drove him to school. Nathaniel wanted to get it off his chest. Seeing Renata in such a desperation made him feel confused, he felt like there is a huge misunderstanding between Renata and Ruben that he needed to straighten up. Come to think of it though, he didn't owe his stepbrother any explanation. Ruben came to school with Brenda! Where did Ruben even sleep last night?

Ruben gave Nathaniel a quick mean glance as they came across and walked straight pass through each other. Nathaniel didn't even tried to stop his step-brother. He could have tried to convince him to come home, but he didn't. Why didn't he? He knew why. He enjoyed having Cecilia as his mother, he enjoyed having Renata, he enjoyed having no arguments in the house anymore. He enjoyed the fact that Ruben got out of the house. It's ridiculous and selfish, but he enjoyed it.
