Chapter 8: It's You

Renata went to the bleachers and took a gulp of her Pocari Sweat. She enjoyed volleyball and despite she wasn't the main player in the school team, she sometimes would join the team practice. She was talking with some girls from her class when Ruben walked out from the changing room.

His black hair was wet and he had changed to his new basketball team attire. Renata had to admit, her secret boyfriend was adorable. Her admiration didn't last long however, Jaclyn came out with her bunny babes wearing mini cheerleading dresses. A minute later she went over to Ruben and as the two started talking, Renata could hear Jaclyn's pitchy laughters. She wished she could just walked there and claim that Ruben is hers.

The gym coach walked in not long after, breaking Jaclyn and Ruben's conversation. Renata sat at the front of the bleacher, she knew that Ruben has a reputation for having sporty trait, but she never paid attention to his game before, in addition he never went to school.

The coach divided the boys into teams and Ruben was in charge as a captain in his team. They were playing one-on-one, and as soon as the whistle is blown, Ruben jumped and stole the ball. The game started.

Renata was in awe staring at Ruben playing, he looked so cool! He was sweating, his eyes was stern but his expression was playful. He was always good in manipulating people. After a few three-pointers, it was already half-time and the coach asked the team to take a break. Jaclyn ran up to Ruben with a plastic cup of water.

What on earth did Jaclyn try to do? Isn't the superstar Troy Zolansky good enough for her? Renata felt her blood boiled. She got up and reached for the basketball. Shooting the ball onto the nets. She wanted to throw the ball at Ruben and Jaclyn, but she didn't want to make it obvious. After few minutes hesitating, she tried to shoot the ball at the edge of the hoops, so that it will bounce towards Ruben. After a couple of tryouts, she succeeded. The ball bounced towards Ruben.

The water from the plastic cup spilled onto him. "Hey! Watch out!" He shouted. "who threw at me?!"

Renata went over to him, and bend down getting the ball. "I did." She said half-heartedly. "Sorry." There's a sound of annoyance in her voice.

"Becareful to where you shoot, Violin." Jaclyn added. "Such an annoyance!"

Ruben was just staring at Renata. His eyes were blank. "Shut it, Jac." He finally said, smiling. "Fighting with Nathaniel's girl isn't worth it."

Nathaniel's girl? What did he mean by that? "What did you just say?" Renata put her bravery to clarify what Ruben said.

"Nathaniel's girl." He repeated with a serious yet playful expression. Oh, that's it! Renata thought. His manipulation is just too much. He never pick a bone to fight with her! Why is he doing this to her?

"We need to talk, Ruben Tyler. Now." Renata's voice turn stern now.

Ruben got up, chuckling. "Nathan's girl wants me." He joked, while a couple of basketball players were just quiet followed by Jaclyn's laughter. He finally followed her to the janitor's room in the hallway.

"What are you trying to do?!" Renata's angry voice filled with jealousy.

"Nothing." Ruben replied flatly.

"What are you doing with Jaclyn?"

Ruben sighed. "Jaclyn again." He turned around, his hand planted on the knob. "I'm leaving."

"No." Renata could hear pleading in her own voice. "I'm sorry... I'm just jealous that Jaclyn could be all over you, but i don't."

"You can." He held her chin up and gave her lips a quick peck. "Just not in public."

Renata sighed. He kissed her again, deeply this time and her head is running wild. Then he stopped abruptly.

"Are you coming?" He twisted the door knob and pushed open the door, walking out on the opposite direction of the gym.

"Where are you going?" Renata's eyes widened in shock.

"My Harley."

"What? Are you skipping?!"

"No. We are. I need a day with my girl." He added, glancing at Renata who just fell into step beside him. Renata could feel her face blushed. She never skip school before, but if she has to choose between seeing Jaclyn or herself all over Ruben, she would choose herself any day.

As they walked side by side towards Ruben's Harley, Renata notice a dirty blonde guy on his phone, seemingly conversing something serious in the middle of the car park. Hoping that the guy wouldn't notice her, she grabbed a helmet from Ruben, and jumped onto the Harley. In a count of seconds, they left.
