Second Chances for a ferret (Draco/Hermione Fan Fiction)

Ron's exit

            ***

            In no time the bookstore was ready for the grand opening, books lined the shelves and many aisles were stacked with the different genres Hermione imagined people would love. Hermione was happy to be able to hold many of the school books that students would eventually need—making business boom during the year—the store had been painted a pale blue while the shelves were dark brown. The counter sat towards the back of the store with a door that led to the storage area and a stairway which led to her one bedroom loft.

            “It looks incredible in here,” a voice called out behind Hermione as she glanced around the store.

            Hermione turned to see Ron slowly approaching the counter where she stood, “I just came to see it Hermione. Remember I supported this idea from the second you told me.”

            Hermione nodded as she gripped her wand under the counter, “what are you really doing here Ron?”

            Ron sighed as he leaned against the counter, “I wanted to talk to you.”

            “I have nothing to say to you.”

            “Listen Hermione, I’m going to stand here and talk to you even if you don’t listen.” Ron took a breath before continuing, “I was a horrible boyfriend to you. At first I believed I treated you the way I know you deserved but towards the end we both can see how bad I actually was. I’m not proud of this but I did cheat on you Hermione, I didn’t mean for it to happen but I’m positive that Lavender was putting something in my drinks in order to keep me around. I only know that because when I tried to look back on my memories they were fuzzy and many were just blank. I realize that there’s nothing I can do to win you back but I want to be friends—we were great friends and I don’t want to lose that.”

            Hermione gave a small smile and looked into the blue eyes that she had woken up next to for months, “sure Ron.”

            Ron grinned at Hermione, “so we can start our friendship again?”

            Hermione nodded, “just friends.”

            Ron nodded and then frowned, “I suppose you’re with Malfoy now?”

            Hermione shrugged, “not exactly. I don’t know if that will ever happen I suppose we’re just friends as well.” She knew this lie was huge and that she actually was with Draco, neither had fully acknowledged the fact but Draco’s constant presence over Harry’s home and wherever else she may be made her believe that Draco was trying to become closer to her.

            Ron’s brows furrowed as he observed her then shrugged, “I can’t say I approve—because I really don’t. But Harry told me about everything and well, maybe the arse can actually protect you.”

            “Ron, you were an amazing boyfriend.”

            Ron snorted, “no I wasn’t. I ended up cheating on you love.”

            Hermione nodded and looked away, “you always did protect me though.”

            Ron nodded, “it’s the reason I became an auror actually.”

            Hermione smiled, “makes sense now.”

            Ron stood up straighter and nodded, “I’ll be seeing you Hermione.” He turned towards the door and smiled to Hermione, “please be careful Hermione. I don’t know what I’d do if I found out you got hurt.”

            Hermione began to stutter before nodding, “take care Ron.” Before she stopped herself she ran towards Ron and hugged him tightly. Hermione didn’t say anything as she let go, Ron turned and faced her before he hugged her tightly and kissed the top of her head. “we can go back to being friends after today,” Ron whispered as he backed away and pulled the door opened behind him. “let me know when the store is officially opened. I’d like to see it filled with people.”

              Hermione nodded as she watched Ron apparate, it would be a month before Ron and her became comfortable enough to sit in the same room and not bicker or act like anything had ever happened between the two.
