Percy POV
When I wake up, I'm still in the closet. I see light streaming in. It must be the next day. I won't be surprised if I stayed in here for another month though. Gabe has a habit of forgetting about me at times.Suddenly, the door is jerked open and man, this is a surprise! He drags me to my room.
"You have school and don't be late!" he exclaims and slams the door.
That was a shocker. I crawl around my room to find something sharp. Soon, I'm rewarded with a broken glass bottle. I saw at the bonds and get free.
I'm a little pale and green in the face, there are burn marks are my wrist from sawing, and a bruise on my face. I probably have more cuts too, but I won't worry about those. I pull on my hoodie and get to school.
I walk to my locker and open it. I forgot to mention, those nine empty lockers around mine have owners now. What would you know, Annabeth and the others occupy them. Groan.
"Hey, Peter, how's it going?" Grover asks.
"Good." I answer and close my locker to walk to class.
"Today we are going to have a pop quiz!" The math teacher, Mrs. Fury, exclaims and gives me the evil eye. Is this another fury? It would make sense.
The quiz takes forever. I never paid attention in class so I don't know what we're learning. Some of it I already know from previous years though so I go on that.
Next, we grade them. I grade Annabeth's and she grades mine. Surprise, surprise, I got an F and she got an 100. Same old Wise Girl.
Did I just say that? Wise Girl? I haven't said that in years! Why am I thinking of that? I shouldn't! They forgot about me. I need to forget about them.
"Mr. Johnson, I will like to see you after class." Mrs. Fury says. Is she going to attack me in an empty classroom this time instead of a museum?
She doesn't attack me, but she does scold me. "Mr. Johnson, I know you have the potential to do good in my class so please put some effort in it. If you don't, I'll have to tell the principal and he will have to decide how to help you. Summer school maybe?" I shake my head. Gabe would kill me. "Then please do good. I'll keep an eye out for you."
"Yes, ma'am." Keep an out for me or on me?
"You can leave." I hurry out of the room and to my next class.
Time Lapse to Lunch
I decided to skip lunch today, but I don't care anymore. People have been starting rumors that I'm anorexic because I'm so skinny. The truth is people, if Dylan stops taking my lunch, Gabe actually went to the store (one chance in a million), and I had some blue food coloring, I would be eating nonstop.
Anyway, I'm in the library in the back corner, avoiding everyone in the cafeteria. I'm discovered close to the end by The Seven and the others.
"Hey." Piper greets. I nod.
"So, what did you make on the math quiz," Leo asks. "I made a 79! Record!"
"93." Calypso.
"90." Nico.
"96." Grover.
"100." Thalia.
"97." Frank.
"94." Hazel.
"99." Piper.
"100." Jason.
"100." Annabeth.
"32." I say and everyone gasps. "Don't judge. I don't do well in math."
"We could help you," Jason offers.
"Nah, that's alright." I have an eternity of high school anyway. Don't need to go through the trouble of doing good when I have to do it again.
"Are you sure? It would be no trouble." No trouble for them, but it would be for me.
"No, it's fine."
"Are you doing anything after school?" Frank asks.
"I have to get home."
"To your stepdad? How is he?" Annabeth asks.
It's like the world stops. Did she just ask about Gabe? Why? How did she know I had one? Are they stalking me? "Fine."
"How about your mom?" Leo asks.
Why did he ask about her? He obviously already knows the answer since Annabeth asked about the stepparent. "She's dead."
They get quiet until Frank speaks up again. "Oh, man, I'm so sorry. My mom died when I was younger."
"Yeah, well, thanks, but I would appreciate it if you didn't bring her up again. It's been a year since she died."
Technically, it's been 100 years. She, Paul, and my little sister were killed by monsters sent by Hades. They love making me suffer. That was punishment. You know, "No matter how much you try, every mortal you all ever love will be killed in front of you for your actions." and all that crap.
"Sorry. I didn't know."
"No, you didn't." I push them aside and walk away. "See you around."
My walk turns into a run and I head to the school's roof. This is the only place that's quiet every day.
I sit there. Even though Annabeth and them betrayed me, I can't help but try to keep them safe. Stupid fatal flaw. I can't have them be killed. They were my friends and I feel like I have to make sure they don't end up like the others:
Eliza Collins, Haley Newton, Grant Walker, Oliver Edwards, Fiona Dalton, and Lucas Benne a year after being cursed...and countless others. I know every one of them by name though and every day, their deaths play over and over again.
