Percy POV
The next day at school, I avoid Vance and the others at all cost. Hiding in class, disappearing at lunch, and hurrying out of class.Call me a coward if you want, but after what Vance did to me, I couldn't face them. He was a monster, born in the depths of Tartarus. Literally.
He told me not to tell the others or he'd kill them. I want to though. So bad. Show them I was right and he was wrong. But I can't. I can't risk their lives. The only thing I can do is avoid them and wait for them to leave. Only then can I live on with my life. If only they didn't interfere.
The others notice I'm avoiding them. After school, I'm running out and around a corner when an arm comes out. I can't slow down and it hits me, knocking me to the ground and the breath out of me.
They come out. Vance was the one that held his arm out. Surprise, surprise.
"Oops, sorry," he says with fake sympathy.
I get up. "What do you want?"
"Why have you been avoiding us all day? We're not going to hurt you!" Annebeth exclaims.
You already did. "I have to."
"Because of the curse?"
"Yeah."
"Oh, please! I could care less about that stupid curse! It wasn't your fault, it was your great ancestor."
"Maybe you don't care, but I do. Just leave me alone."
"No!" She takes a step toward me. "I'll help you get rid of this curse."
"No! Go away! Stay away!"
"You can't stop me."
"I'm doing this for your own good! Listen to me!"
She backs off. She's never seen me so earnest about something. "Fine," she says sadly.
Annabeth POV
I put on a fake sad smile. "I won't stop you, but later we're going to the private sea area at the pier. You're welcome to come."He nods and leaves. He bought my story. Today, he will die by my hand and nothing will stop me.
"When are we going to the lake?" Jason asks confused. "And why?"
"Because I got some information about Peter." I tell them everything the voice told me. When I'm done, their faces are full of shock.
"We have to kill him?" Piper asks.
"He's a monster?" Hazel questions.
"Wouldn't Grover have known?" Thalia raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah, and I didn't smell anything on him except what I told you, the sea." Grover persists.
They were obviously very uncomfortable about killing him. Especially since the only evidence we had was a voice I had heard.
"Annabeth, are you sure you weren't bearing things last night? You were up pretty late," Calypso states.
"Were killing a boy! And he's the same age as us!" Leo exclaims.
"Something about this doesn't seem right," Nico mumbles. "If he was a monster, he would've attacked us already, no questions asked."
"Are you doubting my word?" I ask angrily and they all shrink back.
"No! We just need to think about this," Jason says.
"I, for one, agree with Annabeth. If Peter really is a monster, we should kill him," Vance declares. Finally, someone that believes me!
"I don't disagree that we shouldn't kill a monster, but we have no evidence except you heard a voice."
"You trust me as a leader, right?" I ask and they all nod. "Trust me in this then."
"Let's kill this monster," Vance says and everyone sways for a second.
"Fine," Thalia says. "We'll kill him."
"Everyone in agreement?" I ask. They all nod at the same time. Strange.
"Let's kill a monster then."
Percy POV
I arrive at the house around 4:15 and unlock the door. When it opens, Gabe is standing there with a beer in his hand.He grabs me by the shirt and pulls me into the house. He drags into the living room and throws me on the couch.
"Hand it over now," he says.
I'm utterly confused. "What?"
"The extra money Charles gave to you."
"He said for me to spend it on myself."
"And you're going to be an unselfish little brat and get it for me. Now or else." I gulp. I know what that means.
I walk up the steps and into my room where I hid the money. I see Riptide on the dresser and stare at it. Everything comes to me at once. The battles I fought with it, the victories, the losses, going into every battle with it with Annabeth.
Annabeth! The others! Everything clicked like a puzzle. I've been so blind and stupid! Vance said he would kill the others if I told them, but they're perfectly capable of handling him themselves. Along with me, they're considered the best fighters at both camps! How did I not think of this?
"Punk! Where's the money?"
I look at the money in my hands then my sword, going back and forth. I was going to do something crazy and life threatening if Gabe found out.
I grabbed Riptide and opened my window. A long vine was out there and stopped five feet above the ground. I grabbed it and slide down.
I run and run out of the driveway, down the street, and to the private sea area by the pier.
Instead of happy people in the water, I see the demigods, stone faced, sitting on the rocks, sharpening their weapons. Vance spots me and grins.
"Welcome, Peter! To your last few minutes on Earth!"
