We pulled up at a California school. I have to admit it didn't look anything like West Beverly in 90210. I rolled the window down and looked at the bland high school. Students walked from the two connecting buildings. I bet I was going to have the best time at this school. Not.

My mom put my out of daze when she started yelling at me. "Gabriella! Are you listening to me?"

I turned my head to face her. My mom was probably the prettiest woman I'd ever seen. Gorgeous shining black hair, deep brown eyes, and a small round face. "No, Mom, I didn't hear you." I answered.

"I said to have a good day." She smiled at me. I gave a faint smile back, trying to tell her not to leave me here for eight hours. Reluctantly I stepped out of my mom's Ford Explorer. I found the variety in students amazing. A boy passed me with red and black hair. Another girl passed me and she was dressed like she stepped out of Clueless.

I can not believe my mother had the nerve to send me here. This was going to be the worst year of my life. I could already tell.

I walked into my first period class, which was US History. There were a huge amount of students. At my old school there were only ten people per class. This one had roughly around twenty. I made my way to the back of the class, in which I found the only empty seat. I plopped down in my desk. To my right was the kid with the red and black hair, who was carving something into the desk. My left sat a boy with blonde hair that looked like it took him an hour to do.

I looked at the guy to my my left. He looked like the kind of guy I wanted to be friends with. "Hey I'm Gabriella."

He turend his head to look at me. That's when I saw this lip piercing and his gorgeous blue eyes. "I'm Luke." He said with no facial expression what so ever. "You new?" He asked, not breaking our eye contact. I nodded in response, and moving my dark brown hair out of my face. "Hand me your schedule." He ordered in a simple tone.

I did as be said and handed Luke a folded piece of paper. He looked at intently. He folded it back and slapped it on my desk. "We have next period, lunch and fifth through eight periods together." I wasn't sure how I felt about Luke. He seemed to not care about anything. Or maybe he just didn't care about new people.

"Cool." I muttered, as soon as the teacher walked in.

"It sure is." Luke said in a monotone.

In the middle of class Luke poked my side. "What's your last name, Gabriella?"

"Erickson. You?"

"Hemmings." Luke smiled, which made him look like he may not hate everything.

After history I tried to catch up with Luke in the hallway. "Hemmings! Wait up!" I called, but the guy with the red and black hair was blocking my path. "Walk much?" I shot to the guy. He looked at me with a raised brow. "Bitch much?" He retorted. The guy smirked, his were full and the perfect shade of soft pink.

I shoved past him to get to Luke. "Who the hell is that?" I asked him.

Luke looked back at him. "Michael Clifford. He's in our history class, art studio and English."

I let out a loud groan. "He's such an asshole." I may not know Michael very well but that little encounter was enough.

"He's my best friend, Gabriella." Luke told me, arriving at his locker. I laughed, because there was no way that Luke was serious. "You've got to be kidding me." He glanced at me while exchanging his history book for his sketch book. "I'm not."

I didn't want to believe Luke. I liked Luke, I could see us becoming friends, but not with Michael around. "But why? How?" I leaned up against the row of lockers.

"We hated each other in freshman year." Luke said in a monotone. I swear he had no emotion to his voice. "But then some stuff happened that made me think differently." I wanted to ask him what exactly happened. I didn't think it was a good idea to be prying into someone's, whom I just met, life on the first day of school.

"Look, I have to go somewhere real quick so you can go to class without me." Luke said, slamming his locker shut. "Don't give me that confused look." But I did. "The art room is just down this hallway," he pointed to where a couple was making out at the end of the hallway, "take a left and it's the second door on the right." I nodded and Luke gave me a smirk.

At my last school the art room wasn't as big as this one was. You could fit a small parking lot in this room. I walked over to an empty set of desks and waited for class to start. I waited for Luke to show up. I was looking through my bag when someone sat down next to me. I looked up to see if it was Luke. I was mistaken. It was Michael. He didn't bother to acknowledge me once he sat down. He was shaking his leg, which bothered me to no end. "Do you mind?" I asked, referring to his shaking.

Michael cocked his head, "I do but thanks for asking." I couldn't believe him. He was such a complete jackass. "It's nice to know someone who doesn't even know me is worried."

That's when let out a laugh that made people look at me. "If you think I'm worried about you, than you should really get better at reading people." He turned around fully to face me. "Look here, princess." I hate him. "If you think that I'm some stressed out, malign, punk, then you have another thing coming to ya." I hated him. I didn't say anything in return because I didn't know what to say. I've never had someone talk to me like that. So what Michael saw was some girl staring at him with a blank expression. He scoffed and turned back to face the board.

Finally Luke walked in five minutes before class started. His eyes were red and it looked like he was crying or he was rubbing them a lot. I watched him walk past me, without even looking in my direction. It looked like I was stuck with Michael.

By the time lunch rolled around I had managed to not get in Michael's way. Luke said he had something to take care of so that meant I was most likely going to eat alone. The cafeteria was filled with loud students, talking, screaming or running around. I had to look really hard to find a table, but finally I did. I walked past Michael's table where he was sitting with two other guys.

"Gabriella!" Someone called after me. I turned to see that it was Michael. "Come sit with us." He gestured me over. I was skeptical at first but then decided to give it a try. Luckily for me the only open seat was next to Michael. I hated him. "That's Calum." Michael pointed to the guy sitting directly across from me, "that's Ashton." He said nodding to the guy across from him. What was going on?

"So Gabriella," Calum started to talk, "are you new?" He smiled at me, which was cute.

"Yea I am. My dad's job makes us move around a lot." I told Calum while poking at the meatloaf on my plate. "I just moved here from North Carolina."

"He didn't ask for your life story." I heard Michael say to himself, just loud enough for only me to hear. I shot him a look that clearly explained how much I didnt like him.

When I got home after school I felt like I just returned from war. I had been dodging Michael ever since lunch. Adding on to that, I hardly saw Luke after second period. I didn't have any classes with that Ashton guy. I did have last period English with Calum.

My mom grilled me with first-day-of-school questions. "Did you make any friends?" "What was it like?" "How are your classes?" "Is anyone smoking?" All of which answered with one word responses. I couldn't wait to go back to school tomorrow.
