I sat on the living room couch watching some t.v., awaiting Isaac's arrival. Both Ash and my dad were at work (so much for Sunday being a day of rest). Mezzo lay next to me his head in my lap and as I petted it. Sparky was tearing away at his new toy. All was right with the world.
My phone buzzed next to me.
My mom's sick and doesn't want you to catch it. Want to just hang at your place then?
~Isaac
That's fine with me just let me ask Mezzo!
~Me
Smart ass!
~Isaac
Mezzo said no. Bye!
~Me
What?! Oh come on!
~Isaac
He says you have to ask nicely and take back what you said!
~Me
Really?! WTF!? That's ridiculous! I'm on my way!
~Isaac
Nope! Mezzo says no! You know the conditions!
~me
FML. FINE! May I please come over? I take back what said!
~Isaac
Bring food and you'll be good!
~me
Alright! I'm coming! See you soon!
~Isaac
Bye! No crashing or I'll kill you!
~me. . .
"You got the stuff!" I yelled when he came through the door.
"Am I a good boyfriend or what?" Isaac asked spreading his arms out.
"I guess," I stood up and pecked his lips.
"Oh and here," he rummaged through the bag and came up with two bones. "For Mezzo and Sparky."
"Awe how sweet of you! They're going to love these!" I grasped the bones and ripped them out of their packaging and whistled for the dogs to come. They rushed over and looked up excitedly. "Sit!"
They listened nicely. "Good boys!" With that I gave them each a bone and they went and laid down in their perspective beds. "We all say thank you. Now let's get started! What do you want to start with? Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts or Moana."
"Hmm... Moana that way if I don't like it we can only get better from there," he replied.
"Oh you'll love it trust me," I said holding up the case.
"It's a Disney Princess movie!" He protested.
"Yes, but it's different from your typical princess movie. Come on I swear you'll like it! Remember my friend Joe?"
"The big weirdo, I mean that in a good way, that moved away a few months ago? Yes I do."
"Well he's a hard core movie critique and he loves it, so there."
"That's one person's opinion."
"Fine then a bet!" I proclaimed. "The loser massages the winner's neck!"
"Why is that the price?" Isaac asked.
"Because my neck hurts," I pouted, rubbing my neck for a second before holding my hand out. "Deal or no deal."
"Alright deal!" He exclaimed and shook my hand.
"So it be settled! Let the movie begin!" I shouted dramatically. I put the movie in and during the previews we got situated on the couch. He sat down and I sat next to him and snuggled into his side with my head on his chest, his hand resting on my shoulder, and a blanket over us.
*after the movie*
"See I told you!" I exclaimed.
"Yes yes you did! Guess you know me better then I know myself," he admitted.
I got up to put Fantastic Beasts in, "no honey I just know movies." He rolled his eyes at me and smiled. I sat back down.
"Would you like to turn in your winnings?" Isaac asked.
"Yes!" I exclaimed and sat up, turning my back to him.
Suddenly he pulled me onto his lap and sat me facing forward, towards the tv. He pushed my hair aside and he was about to start messaging when light reflected through the window onto the opposite wall, signalling that a car had pulled up. I stood up and looked out the window. Parked in the driveway beside Isaac's car was a small tiny car, some model of a Cadillac. I did not recognise this car what so ever. I quickly put my hair up in a ponytail and pulled on my sweater I kept at stand by. A woman wearing a grey suit, her hair pulled into a tight bun, and briefcase in her hand, stepped out.
Isaac came up behind me, "do you know-"
"She's a lawyer," I intervened. "I saw plenty of them when we were putting my mother in jail. What the hell is one doing here." We watched the lady walk up the driveway. "Can you put Sparky in his cage please?"
"Yeah," he said quietly, giving my shoulder a squeeze.
She walked up our stairs and looked for a doorbell, but my dad never cared to buy one, so she resulted in knocking. I took a deep breath, I wanted to go hide. I didn't know what she was here for and I didn't like that.
"Let me get it, Kat," Isaac said. "It's okay."
I nodded my head and stood back while he opened the door. "Hello."
"Hi! Is this the Ranson residence?" She asked politely.
"Yes it is. May I ask who's asking?" Isaac replied.
"My name is Susan Greaves. I am here on behalf of the Wisconsin D.A. office. We are revisiting the case of Jeanine Blanch, and I am here to speak with her children, Asher and Katrina Ranson. Are they home?" The lady did her speech, remaining polite the whole time.
My body went rigid. I began shaking. They were revisiting my mother's case, my abusive mother. Let me guess they want me to testify and help her get out. Mezzo bumped my leg and licked my hand. I pet his head and smiled.
