"Are we really doing that again?" I asked Isaac. Isaac and I were skyping a couple days after school resumed (January 4), and there was another dance this weekend.
"Yes! Come on we made an impact during the masquerade and only like half the school was there. Just think what'll happen this time because at the very least three fourths of the school will be there. Plus it's fun to hear the gossip," Isaac explained.
"I'm waiting for our friends to ask if we're the couple since "we don't go to dances anymore". They'll figure it out eventually," I said.
"Well my friends won't be there, they're only go to homecoming and prom this year. Besides isn't this is the last dance before prom? It's January and prom's April right," he asked. I nodded my head. "Okay then maybe they won't get suspicious besides remember homecoming? We couldn't even be near each other, and I wanted to dance with you and it was very difficult to get those whacko girls away from me. Come on Kat, please?"
"Alright fine, but we have a movie day and watch Moana, Doctor Strange, and Fantastic Beasts. Got it?" I asked raising an eyebrow mainly messing with him.
"Okay that's fine. I've been wanting to watch Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts again anyways. I haven't seen Moana yet though," he agreed.
"I saw it with Ariel and Micaela, it's actually really good," I replied.
"Alrighty then. Dance Saturday, movie day Sunday. Your house or mine?" He asked.
"Yours, we had that whole day here before. It's your turn to host."
"Well okie dokie smokie. That'll make my mom happy. My word she is constantly asking about you. I swear she loves you more than me sometimes," he said with his face in his hands.
"Oh I highly doubt that," I rolled my eyes while giggling.
"She's always saying 'Kat has a good head on her shoulders! She's a great kid! You chose a great one, don't screw it up!' See she loves ya!"
"I speak the truth!" I heard his mom's voice from a distance on the laptop.
"Ugh! See!" He exclaimed with fake frustration.
We both laughed.
. . .
"What the hell do you mean you're not going?" Ariel asked clearly not happy.
"I just don't want to go. I'm sorry, but it's a lot of unnecessary spending. I'm saving up for prom, sorry," I explained, lied.
"You could've borrowed one of my dresses and gotten ready at my house. You wouldn't've had to pay anything except admission," she expressed.
"Okay look. I got another job aside from my summer job, and I couldn't get off. Okay? You happy now?" I shot back and sank into the coach. Man was this getting difficult. Lying nonstop wears a person down. Why am I doing this to myself?
"You could've just said that. We're sisters! You don't need to hide," she said sitting next to me.
"I know, but I knew you wouldn't be happy."
"You're right, but just say something. Okay well in that case I'm going to get ready! Bye! Have fun at work!" With that she was out the door.
I got up and went to my room to start getting ready too.. . .
About a half an hour or more later I heard the doorbell ring, I heard my dad answer it and the Isaac's voice follow. I smiled to myself and tucked a loose strand of hair in my fancy braid I managed to do. I have this little talent where I can figure out how to do braids, but no one knows so I figured that this would be a great time to showcase them. I looked in my mirror and checked to make sure everything was in place. I wore a black dress with a white lace design over the black, it was fitted on my torso and expand out at my waist. It looked great (and bonus it was only $10 at the thrift shop) and the braid looked good if I do say so myself, and I'd finally learned how to do make up. Okay now I was ready.
I walked out of my room and descended the staircase quietly so I could listen to the conversation. It wasn't much just sports talk. Isaac turned his face and smiled when he saw me, I returned the gesture.
"You look gorgeous m'lady," he said while holding out his hand for me.
"Okay you two you know the drill! Pictures!" Dad exclaimed and lifted up the camera.
Isaac stood behind me slightly and wrapped his hands around my waist, you know the typical couple pose. Dad took the pictures and we changed poses and got individuals. Ash came down the stairs dressed up in a suit and tie. He was about to reach for his keys when-
"Wait a minute Mister! Pictures. Get over here," Dad ordered.
Ash groaned, but walked over anyways. Dad snapped a few solo pics of Ash and then told me to stand with him. We got a few side by side and then dad told Isaac to join. I stood between the two boys as Dad finished up his photo shoot.
"Okay you're free to go! Have fun! Be safe! Be smart!" Dad exclaimed. We thanked him and we all got on our jackets and headed out saying bye. Isaac and I got in his car and Ash climbed in Dad's car and we were off.Isaac parked in the back of the parking lot. He reached in the back and came up with our masquerade masks.
"Ready?" He asked.
"The question is are you ready?" I replied.
"Hell yeah," he mumbled. He leaned forward and kissed me. We put on our masks and headed to the building. We hung up our jackets, and took one last breath before holding hands and confidently sauntering in, a slow song playing in the background.
We walked to the far side of the dance floor and Isaac placed his right hand on my waist and I placed my left hand on his right shoulder, our other hands clasped together. We rocked back and forth whilst spinning.
I looked around and saw other couples slow dancing, best friends dancing with each other for a laugh, single people just standing there (that used to be me). A little ways from us Ariel and Kyle were slow dancing, Micaela was near them dancing with some random guy, and the rest of the gang were standing around talking a little ways away from them. I also saw people looking at us and pointing or gesturing, whispering, and/or staring.
I looked up at Isaac. He smiled, and my worry went away. I was lucky to love him. I was lucky that he loved me back. I was never lucky, but for some reason the universe, instead of being a jerk, was being nice.
As the song came to an end Isaac lent down and captured my lips with his in a kiss.
