"Go my darling! Get out as fast as you can!", my mother cried.

A hand tugged on mine, begging me to follow. I turned oncemore to look at my mother, for I knew I would never see her again. Yet she was not there.

The hand pulled me out of the palace, people where screaming and panicking. I thought of my mother screaming just like these people. We swam and swam until my tail felt like it would fall off. I was six years old for crying out loud and couldn't swim for long distances at a fast speed.

"Stop, please!", I cried.

"Shh!", my aunt Valerie cried. She pulled me far down into the water and we both hid behind some rock formations. Then I saw them. Monsters. The scariest thing I had ever seen in the sea was swimming by some coral. There were two of them. Black as coal with a body almost skeletal. The thing had a tail, just like mine but uglier, it was rinkled with scars running up and down.

When they weren't looking Valerie grabbed my hand and we swam in the opposite direction they were going.

Finally Valerie stopped and pulled me in front of her. "Sweety, I know you are scared, I am too but I want you to be brave for me, and your mother". She kissed my forehead.

Valerie handed me a shell necklace and said, "Here, take this, it will help you. Promise never to take it off".

I took the necklace and put it on, a little confused, but promised.

Right after it had settled on my neck I felt a tingling sensation and then my vision slowly started to go black..

When I woke up I felt sand underneath me, I was on a beach, on land! I sat up, looked around, and gasped. I had legs! I, a mermaid, former princess to the merpeople, was human!
