~ Chapter 4 ~

"So have you gotten anything back from Pine Ridge yet?" His question comes as a shock to me.

"No. Not yet." I sigh.

"What about you?"

Silence.

I sit up, giving him a worried look.

"Well?"

"Ya, I got a letter."

His voice sounded weak, almost like a whisper.

"Well did you get in?!" I raise my voice as I begin to get anxious.

With a sigh, Dylan shakes his head an begins playing with a few blades of wet grass.

My heart instantly sinks.

That had been the plan all along. Get into Pine Ridge together and become jockeys. Together. We were always supposed to be together. As best friends surviving this shit hole everyone calls life. But now the plan was off. Either I get in and he doesn't, or neither of us get in. Either way its negative.

The awkward silence between us is finally broken by his shaky voice.

"Kiana?"

"Ya?"

"Can I tell you something?"

I nod, smiling slightly as I think of ways to cheer him up.

"It's just.." He trails off, nervously running his fingers through his hair.

"Just what..?" I press on, beginning to grow inpatient.

Without words, Dylan reaches forward and grabs my waist, pulling me forward and kissing me right on the lips.

I was shocked. Never had I ever thought that shy little Dylan would ever do something like this. However, I have to admit, he is an awesome kisser. And I enjoyed ever single second of it. After what seemed like just seconds, he pulls away and smiles.

"It's just that I love you."

And without another word, he hops onto Dover's back and gallops out of sight.
