3. Eavesdropping

As soon as I fell asleep, I was hit with nightmares. It was the day Minka died. Except this time I could hear what Samuel and Minka were arguing about. I was hovering next to the scene.

"I know what you did Sammy." Minka said.

"What exactly did I do?" Samuel asked.

"You poisoned Pit." she replied. "He's six, Samuel! What did he ever do to you that you hate him so much?" Samuel started to laugh.

"Me? Kill Pit? Wow, Snow Princess. This is low, even for you." he said. Snow Princess? "Might I remind you, that you were the one that almost killed Pit when he was two." Minka flinched.

"That was an accident and you know it." she said. "You are trying to purposely kill him."

"And why would I do that?" Samuel asked.

"Because you're a Darkling!" she yelled.

"How long have you known?" he asked.

"So it's true then. I figured it out after Margret was pushed." Minka said. "You're the one who pushed her. Now you're trying to kill Pit. Then after Pit you'll kill me."

"Why not kill you now?" Samuel asked. "I was hoping to convince you to join me. With your... gift, you could be very valuable to me. You could rule the world with me. But I can see you won't join me. So you leave me no choice. Good-bye Minka."

Before Minka could react, he pushed her. She screamed. Samuel sat there and laughed. He took off. I saw my 6 year old self running towards the scene. The dream went black. A woman's voice spoke into my mind. It was eerily familiar.

"You know the argument between your brother and sister now." she said. "Remember this memory when you meet the Ice Queen tomorrow."

"Who are you?" I asked.

"You'll find out soon. I promise." she said. "I must go. An evil force is trying to invade your dreams. Good-bye, angel."

Samuel was stirring a cauldron. He didn't seem to notice me. He must be the evil force that woman was talking about. He looked at me.

"So nice you can join me, little brother." he said. "I can see that she showed you the memory that day. You know what I find funny? I find it funny that the area around the North Mountain has had snow nonstop since that day. Of course that insufferable Goddess of Light you serve has been trying to find out since. After I take care of you, she'll be the first I destroy." He added something to the cauldron. He noticed me watching. "Oh don't worry. In a few days time you'll find out what this is. I know you're going to the Ice Queen tomorrow. Ironic how she uses that name when somebody she absolutely hates gave her the idea."

He stirred the cauldron some more. He frowned. He was thinking something. He grabbed another ingredient and added it to the mixture. I looked at the mixture. It was revolting. It was black and green, poisonous looking liquid. It smelled like rotting corpses. Samuel was studying me carefully.

"If you're thinking this is how I'm going to kill you, you're wrong. I tried to poison you once before, and failed at killing you with it. Before you say anything, yes Minka was right about me poisoning you. She was wrong about me trying to kill you though. You're light is no match for my darkness. When I do kill you, I'll make sure you suffer. Good-bye, brother." The dream faded.

I woke up. I wasn't going back to sleep. I put on a tunic and grabbed my bow. Some late night training ought to calm me down. I locked my door and headed downstairs quietly. Lady Palutena and the centurions were sleeping. As I got to the kitchen I heard voices.

"So how come you never mentioned Pit had a Darkling for a brother, Palutena?" Viridi asked.

"It wasn't in my place to tell you. It was Pit's." Lady Palutena replied.

"Lady Palutena, if I may ask. If Master Samuel is his brother, are you sure you can trust young Master Pit?" Arlon asked. "I mean, what is the saying? Blood is thicker than water."

"Now hold up dude." Violet said. "I have known Pit his whole life, that's longer than you have. Believe me, Pit is always on the side of good. And Pit can't forgive his brother for taking away his ability to fly and killing their sisters. I can see it in his face every time someone mentions Samuel. He honestly hates Samuel. But I think Pit believes deep down, Samuel can be turned good. I believe that's why Pit refuses to fight him after all these years."

"Still even if Pit is not on his brother's side, I don't think he should be included in this war. It's a little too personal for him. It might cloud his judgment." Pittoo said.

"You're absolutely right." Lady Palutena agreed. "Which is why you'll be fighting this one, Pittoo."

Violet opened her mouth but Lady Palutena held her hand up. I couldn't believe it. I was grateful to Violet for standing up for me. But I was angry that they were questioning my loyalties and keeping me from the mission. After everything I've done?

"It's settled then. You'll set out for the Southern Beach tomorrow. I believe we should get the Lady of the Shores before we get the Ice Queen." Lady Palutena said.

I couldn't take it anymore. I went upstairs and into my room. I threw on the deadbolt. If they wouldn't let me help them, then I'd go myself. I climbed out the window, careful not to make any noise, and then set off for the South Beach. I had to get to the Lady of the Shores before they did.

~Author's Note~

So Pit is going off by himself? Oh well! To the Jr. Honor Society Members at my school (you know who you are): $8 dues! What a rip-off! What do they go for? We only have 3 or 4 meetings a year and we do no activities! Anyway Disclaimer! Nintendo owns the Kid Icarus character. I own Violet, Samuel, the Ice Queen, Minka, Margret, and the Lady of the Shores.
