“Stop crying…” Logan complained, wiping away my tears with his thumb. But I couldn’t, I just hugged Logan closer to me.
“I can’t, it’s so sad,” I mumbled into his chest.
“Who cries over a song?” He asked, with a mocking edge to his tone. But he hugged me back anyways.
“Lots of people do; it’s a really sad song!” I protested.
“It’s not that sad.”
“Yes it is,” I muttered. See, when the alarm went off it started to play ‘the night that the lights went out in Georgia’. I started to cry and that’s how we ended up arguing whether the song was sad… which it is.
“Are you okay now?”
I nodded, “Yeah, I won’t cry on your shirt anymore.”
“No problem Princess,” Logan replied with a smile. I felt my heart skip a beat, it had been a while since he had called me Princess, and to be honest, I loved the stupid nickname.
I kissed Logan softly, “I love that nickname.”
“Me too,” He agreed, kissing my head and then slipping out of my grasp to stand and stretch. “I’m going to go with John to pick up Sam and Noah. You can come if you want.” I could see that he didn’t want me to, but I wasn’t hurt. I knew Logan just wanted to spend some time alone with his dad, probably to find a way to get back at him.
“No, I’m fine here. I didn’t know they were coming so soon.”
“It’s just as dangerous for them to be around your parents, besides they were ecstatic at the chance to see London.” Logan smiled and I felt a grin slip across my face as well.
“Alright, I’ll see you in a couple hours.” I said; having no idea of just how much would happen in those two little hours.
After Logan and John left, I decided to join the rest of their family for breakfast. I approached the kitchen door, but stopped when I hear yelling inside. Unable to resist, I pressed my ear to the door and listened.
“You are so clumsy! There is something wrong with you; I swear. If it weren’t your father, I wouldn’t even put up with you. As soon as I become your stepmother, you will be shipped off to a school, far, far away.” A voice that I recognized as Laura’s hissed.
A sob came from the other side of the door and a small voice whimpered, “I didn’t mean to break it.”
“Of course you didn’t, you’re just like your mother was, a disaster. You can’t do anything right!” Laura yelled back. “You clean this up and then go to your room until John gets back. I heard footsteps getting closer and I jumped back, pretending to be innocent. Laura strutted out of the room and her eyes narrowed when she saw me, “How much did you hear?”
“Nothing,” I lied; deciding to share the information with Logan before confronting her.
She scowled at me and finally said, “He wouldn’t believe you anyways.” Then she walked away and I rushed into the kitchen. The first thing I saw was Sadie, sobbing on the floor, glass scattered everywhere. I carefully maneuvered my way over to Sadie and picked her up off the floor. She looked terrified and there was a red mark on her cheek, one of her legs was bleeding and her hair was a mess.
“I didn’t mean to break it! I tripped, I’m sorry,” She mumbled, her big green eyes filling with tears.
“It’s okay it wasn’t your fault. Why don’t we go get you cleaned up?”
“I have to clean up the glass,” She muttered, pointing towards the mess.
“I’ll get it; first we need to wash off your knees.” I told and watched as she eyed me, not quite sure what to make of me. Sadie opened her mouth to say something, but she was cut off by a gasp and the door flung open. Riana stared at the mess then looked at us alarmed. “Sadie dropped something,” I explained.
Riana nodded, “I’ll clean it up, and you help her. I’m not good with comforting people…” I nodded and picked up Sadie, carrying her to the bathroom where I proceeded to get the glass out of her knees. It made me sick, but I was thankful for the health class I took senior year.
Once Sadie was clean and had band aids on both knees, she fell asleep in Logan and I’s bed. I left her to sleep and found Laura creeping out of the house in a formal gown. I cleared my throat and she spun on her heel. When she saw that it was me, she sneered, “Where is Sadie? Did she get that mess cleaned up?”
I ignored her question and asked in a hard tone, “Where are you going?”
“That’s none of your business now is it?”
I had to restrain my boiling temper as I replied, “Fine. But, tell me this, did you hit Sadie?”
“You have no proof of anything. John would never believe you over me.” She said, flicking her hair for effect. But she did have a point; no one would believe me, except Logan.
“Did you or did you not?” I asked through gritted teeth. Laura must have sensed my anger because she snorted and fled. I took a calming breath and hunted for cereal, counting the minutes until Logan would get back.
3rd person POV- (Right after Logan left):
Logan found it weird, sitting in the car with John, the man who used to be his father. They would always be related and Logan hated that.
John knew his son would never forgive him, he barely forgave himself, but he knew he had to try. So he started off by talking about his son’s new girlfriend, “So, Mia seems nice.”
“Yeah, she’s the best,” Logan agreed simply, unwilling to sit there and make small talk with John.
“Look, it’s ironic that you’re just now coming to visit me.” John began, gathering the courage to say what he needed to.
But before he could continue Logan broke in, “I didn’t want to visit you. I only came here to protect Mia, you know that.”
John sighed, he knew this wouldn’t be easy, but it still hurt. “Logan. I am really sorry for what I did. I wish I hadn’t, but I can’t go back and change it. And Sadie is the sweetest little girl.”
“Get to the point,” Logan snarled. Did John really think an apology would just magically make things better?
“I passed out the other day after working out at the gym. I went to the E.R. and they did a lot of tests.” John hesitated and got it over with, “I was diagnosed with stage four cancer.”
Logan was stunned silent as he soaked in the news. For the last five years Logan had tried to hate his dad, he honestly did. He hated what John had done to him and his family. But, John was still his family, his only dad. His stepdad was great, but they would never be as close as John and he had been.
“How long do you have left?” Logan asked quietly, barely trusting his voice.
“Six weeks,” John responded just as quietly. He had accepted it; he knew it would make everything easier to just go with it. It was hard, but he had lived a full life. He could die, as long as his children were okay and safe.
“Does Laura know? What about your wedding?” Logan asked, trying to get over his shock.
“No, she doesn’t. I’m going to tell her soon… and move the wedding forward.” He said, hoping his son didn’t hear the last part. However, luck was not on his side.
“You’re still getting married; when you’re just going to…die.” Logan kept his voice steady, but he felt like throwing up.
“I don’t expect you to understand now… but someday, someday you’ll know why I have to do this.” John muttered and they fell into silence. Logan’s mind was stuck on the fact that his father had cancer. John was only thinking of his children, one in particular.
