Four.
We walk out of my house and over to Louis's where he quickly tells his mom he's going out and gets his keys. I'm hoping to get my own car for my nineteenth birthday. I sound a little spoiled- and to be honest I am spoiled but I am a lot less babied at home and I work at the store with Muriel sometimes if she needs an extra hand.
Louis returns to his driveway shortly after he enters his house with his keys in his hand. He jogs over to my side of the car and opens it for me, bowing in the process. Once I'm inside the black car, I see Louis run over to his side and get in the driver's seat. Soon enough, we are on the road.
"Are you going to college?" I ask.
"Yeah, I'm hoping to become a drama teacher or do something with music.
What about you?"
"I want to be an author."
"Cool" Louis says.
"Make a left here" I direct him.
Louis does as I tell him and turns on to the road. He takes one hand off the wheel and runs it through his messy hair, making it stick up even more. I think about just grabbing his hand and making him run it through my hair, but I quickly stop looking at him as soon as he catches a glance at me through the corner of his eye. I look down at my lap, smiling at myself but soon look back up when I hear horns honking.
"Louis!" I screech.
"What?"
"You're driving on the wrong side of the road!" I grab the steering wheel and yank it back to the right side of the road, then fall back in to my seat trying to avoid the sideways glances from the people on the road.
"I forgot I was in America" Louis starts laughing.
I roll my eyes. "You could have gotten us killed!"
"But I didn't" Louis winks.
"Whatever. Turn left then you'll see it. And drive on the right side of the road this time for god's sake."
Eventually, we make it to the ice cream shop without dying. It's usually pretty busy at this time of the year, so I'm not surprised when I see a dozen people waiting in line. I wave hello to a few of the people who make eye contact with me, some of them shouting hello's to me. In a town as small as this, everybody knows everybody.
Louis and I eventually get out ice cream and take a seat on a bench away from everybody else, him across from me.
We are just starting to get in to conversation when my phone rings. I hold up a finger to Louis and instead of shutting up right away he leans over and kisses the top of my finger. With a questionable look, I answer my phone and hold it up to my ear.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Addie! You'll never guess who I just met up with!"
"Who?"
"My old friend group from high school! I'm going to go hang out with them for a while, I'll be back later tonight, and you're welcome to have a friend over." My mom says.
"You're shitting me" I say and glance up at Louis who is happily licking his ice cream cone. This is just too unrealistic.
"Excuse me?"
"I said you're kidding me, that's great! I'll see you soon then" I smile up at Louis who isn't looking back at me.
"Oh. Alright. Byeeeeeeeeeee" Mom holds out the 'e' in 'bye' and I am contemplating going out to find her so I can whack her upside the head for saying that. She knows I hate it yet she continues to do it. If she wasn't my mother and she was just some random girl at my school I would hate her.
I hang up my phone and lick my hand where a bit of my ice cream dripped down, then wipe my hand off with a napkin. When I look back up at Louis he has already finished his ice cream and is wiping his face with a napkin.
"So what do you do for fun around here?" Louis asks, looking around at the quiet town.
"Nothing, really" I reply and finish the last of my chocolate treat.
"So no strip clubs?" Louis pouts.
For some reason, it pains me to think about Louis seeing other girls like that. It might just be my attention seeking self coming out, or it could be because I like Louis and I don't want him seeing other girls naked. I wonder how Louis likes me. Does he just want to be friends? Or more than just friends? I don't know when is too early to date someone, but I think I know Louis enough to date him. It's not like I'm marrying him right away. I'll save that for two weeks after I met him. I start laughing out loud at my own joke inside of my head and Louis gives me a puzzled look from across the table. I just wave him off and try to tame my laugher.
"Phew. That was a good one. Should we go?" I ask.
Louis nods slowly and gets up from the picnic table and I follow him over to his car. When we are halfway there, I feel someone grab me from behind. I abruptly turn around to see who it is, and my eyes land on Juniors Dylan and Grant laughing at me. I am about to tell them off when Louis notices my abrupt stop and turns on his heels, then marches right over to Dylan and Grant who immediately stop laughing.
"Touch her again and I'll make sure you aren't able to touch anyone ever again. Got it?" He growls.
The two boys nod quickly and rush off to the other side of the ice cream shop. My heart can't help but swarm at how Louis got jealous over other guys touching me. Does he like me too? I think I definitely like him. I feel like I'm in seventh grade again.
Instead of thanking Louis, I blush at the ground and he takes my hand in his and walks us to the car. I keep my eyes glued to the ground and try to slow my heart rate, but when I feel Louis's hand in mine my heart begins to pound even more. When we make it to the car, he again opens the door for me and I climb inside, still with my head down. Louis enters the car on the other side and puts it in to drive.
The car ride back to my house is silent, but I break the silence when I gain the courage to talk to Louis about what my mom said on the phone.
"Louis" I start.
"Mhm" Louis hums.
"My mom called and said she's getting home really late tonight" I say. Should I really be doing this? I keep going. "And sometimes I get scared at night because I used to watch horror movies all the time- I actually still do, so I was wondering if you could stay over? You don't have to, it's just I watched this horror movie this one time where the girl was in the shower and there was a guy there and he got her and he killed her and-" I rush.
"Yes, I'll stay" Louis laughs.
"Okay." I breathe. I think I just booked another date.
