Twenty.

“Addie, will you French braid my hair?” Daisy pleads, tugging on my arm.

“I don’t know how” I tell the young girl for the ninth time.

Daisy frowns and runs back to her airplane seat, finally leaving Louis and I alone.

Louis sits on the window seat, claiming it is ‘jerkier’ and he doesn’t want me to get hurt when in reality he just wants to look out the window and keep it all to himself. We are sat almost all the way across the plane from Louis’s parents and sisters, but they always manage to find us, much to Louis’s annoyance. I told him I didn’t mind his sisters and that I thought they were cute, but Louis insisted that the next time they came around he was going to tell them to fuck off. Luckily, they didn’t come around again.

Doris and Ernest, Louis’s youngest siblings were staying at home with his grandparents who drove in from Missouri so his parents could relax and not worry about the babies.

“Passengers, we are about to take flight. Please fasten your seatbelts and stay seated. Thank you for flying with Americas Pilots” The flight attendant says over the speaker, followed by an eagle screeching.

“America” I whisper, saluting to the ceiling.

“Britan” Louis replies, raising his pinkie finger and pretending to drink tea.

I laugh at Louis and I’s stereotypical behavior until I feel the plane taking off. I lean over Louis and look out the window as we lift off the runway and into the air. It’s been a long time since I was in a plane, but I remember enjoying it very much.

“We’ll be there shortly, Why don’t you take a nap?” Louis asks.

“I want to see the city lights though” I complain.

“I’ll wake you up when we’re over them” Louis says and raises the arm rest between us.

“Promise?” I yawn and lean over to rest my head on his shoulder.

Louis wraps his arm around me. “Promise.”

What feels like minutes after I had fallen asleep, I am being awoken by the soft whispering of Louis’s voice in my ear.

“Addie” He whispers.

“What?” I groan, shifting in my seat.

“Look out the window.”

I turn my head on Louis’s shoulder and gaze out the small plane window. Immediately my eyes widen at the sight of lights dancing on the edges of buildings. The ocean is seen on the edge of all the lights, and I see people all along the plane turning to look out their windows.

“Beautiful” I say, my voice barely audible.

“Like you” Louis turns to me.

“Want some crackers with that cheese” I poke Louis’s cheek and he smiles.

“Anything sounds better than this damn airline food.”

I roll my eyes and quickly peck Louis’s cheek before sitting back in my seat and taking a sip from the water bottle provided in the cup holder as soon as we got on the plane. Louis raises his arm and wraps it around me, once again bringing me closer to him.

“We’ll see you two soon then?” Jay says, grabbing Phoebe by the arm so she doesn’t chase after Daisy.

“Yep” Louis takes my hand in his and Jay smiles down at our intertwined fingers.

“Bye Louis, remember to use sunscreen” Jay moves towards Louis and takes his face in her hands. “And remember not to swim until an hour after you’ve eaten” Jay kisses Louis’s cheek and Louis’s face grows red.
