"Kai, you've hardly talked," Lev said.
I looked at the nearly empty plates of food in front of me and shrugged. I'd been sitting back, listening to them go on and on as we ate.
"What's the crip going to say to us? He's living the privileged life of a Blue," Karson said.
"Before we came to the Academy, we weren't Blues and Maroons," Lev said, shooting Karson a look.
"No, we were just delinquents," Karson said, grinning a little.
"I wasn't a delinquent," Isaac said, frowning.
"No, you were just a little bastard," Karson said, wincing when Jin smacked him in the arm with a spoon.
"What got you guys sent here?" I asked, realizing that they were Maroons for a reason.
"Oh, he wants some backstories," Karson said, laughing.
"Oh, me, me!" Amelia said, raising her hand. "I got sent here because I hacked into my old school's system. They told my dad they wouldn't press charges if he sent me here."
"It also probably didn't help that you threatened our homeroom teacher," Lev said.
"Yea, I guess that didn't help," Amelia said thoughtfully. "But I wasn't going to actually burn her cats to death."
"Can you blame her for being so angry?" Lev said, patting a hand down on Amelia's head. "You've got to learn to watch your mouth."
"You seem normal enough," I said to Lev.
He looked over at me and gave a sheepish smile, shrugging. "I'm here for my own reasons."
"You could've bumped up to a Blue if Jin hadn't ruined you," Karson said in amusement.
"I didn't ruin anyone. You all make your own choices," Jin said.
Karson slung an arm around Jin's shoulders. "This guy and I became roommates when his alcoholism got too bad and his folks didn't want him anymore."
"That's only part of it," Jin said, slamming his elbow into Karson's ribs. "Get off me."
Jin pulled the straw out of his drink and bent it a few times until he could snap it in half. He put half in his mouth and tossed the other half back into the cup.
The waiter came and left us our check. We all tossed down money for it and left the restaurant.
"We should go to the bookstore," Isaac said, springing forward so that he was walking next to Jin.
Jin just shrugged and turned down the sidewalk, leading the rest of us. Lev and Amelia were talking about one of the cars parked across the street, Amelia excitedly telling Lev about the kind of car it was.
I looked around the town. I hadn't paid much attention when we drove through it on our way to the Academy. My parents had been pointing out places, but I'd been ignoring them and begging for the sweet release of death.
