I remember the first time I snuck out when I was fifteen. I’d thought of myself as being the most ruthless and fearless teen out there. The fact that nobody noticed me, the princess, just boosted my already high self-esteem.
From that day on I became hooked on my second identity. I could act like myself, not worrying about filtering my words before saying them. I never had to worry up being bratty to prove I could take care and think for myself.
With my blonde alter-ego I could be me, the real me. And it was the best time of my life.
I always got confused though, nobody noticed me as being the princess even though it was painfully obvious at closer inspection. However I couldn’t complain, I loved every minute of it since the first day till now, seven years later.
Smiling smugly, I poked my head out of the passageway and into the watchtower that connected with the fifteen foot tall brick fence. The tower had been abandoned centuries ago and another secret passageway that led to my secret room. As well as the secret passageway the tower had two doors on the ground floor, one opened up to the castle grounds while the other to freedom, a very bushy freedom.
Since the lookout tower hadn’t been used in years, trees, vines and bushes grew and wrapped around it on the other side of the fence, completely hiding the doors to the outside world. I wasn’t even sure if anyone knew of them. If they did the bolts would have been removed as well as the door itself and replaced by solid brick.
The two story tower was completely empty now, but I could imagine how it once was.
The spiral stairs would have once been clean instead of covered in dust and mold. I could imagine the upper floor that was now empty and filled with cobwebs, once clean and furnished. I could imagine guards sitting in hand crafted chairs by the windows, ready and alert yet at the same time rowdy and bored.
The smile remained on my face as I pulled the rusted bolts and plank of wood from the lock on the door. I took a deep breath before pulling the door open and letting the sunlight stream in to the dark watchtower.
I slowly stepped out of the tower making sure not to snag my sweater onto a vine. I placed a rock into the door frame and half closed the door making sure that it didn’t lock behind me.
When I was sure the rock would hold I pushed my way out of the mini forest and into the streets, trying to seem casual as I fixed my wig and fedora. I grabbed a few wire pins from my back pocket and pinned any bits of my actual hair that I thought would fall out of my hair net.
Once I was satisfied I strolled down the street to the bus stop and waited for a bus.
As a teenager I had always found buses as the most thrilling thing ever. It gave me a rush, the same sort of rush and thrill you’d get from riding a rollercoaster. I was never sure if it was because it was unbelievably dangerous for me to ride public transport, or because I knew that if my father saw me, I’d be in huge trouble.
