Prologue

"Listen, Janette! I've told you over and over again! I wanted smoky eyes. What's this?" I shouted to my make-up artist.

"It's... smoky eye?" She said in more of a questioning manner, her thick accent lacing her words.

"No it isn't!" I yelled while standing up. " I look like Cruella DeVille!" I stomped my foot like an angry child as I looked at my makeup through the reflection in my mirror, looking over each imperfection Janette had made. My so called smokey eyes looked as if someone had coloured over my eyelids in a black permanent marker.

"I sorry. Come, I redo. I sorry," she apologized repeatedly.

I chewed at my lower lip for a short moment. "No I'm sorry for yelling at you Janette. It's just tonight has to be perfect..." I blabbed without inhaling once. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes in a desperate attempt to relax.

"It will, you beautiful," she said with the little English she knew. Smiling sincerely Janette patted the black leather make-up chair in front of her. I walked over to the chair and took a seat, letting her convert my 'smoky' eyes to a more simple yet elegant look.

"Oh, you look beautiful." My father smiled proudly as I walked down the stairs in my red sweetheart organza gown.

I smiled as I gazed at my father. He was dressed in traditional royal clothing making him look a bit like a nutcracker. The coat of arms was stitched on the front pocket of his red jacket along with various medals from his time in the military.

I walked towards him and stepped into my father's outstretched arms.

"Your mother would have been so proud," he whispered into my hair with a sad sigh.

I closed my eyes willing myself not to cry at the mention of my departed mother, you'd think after so many years it would hurt less.

"Dad, we're going to be late," I said pulling back.

He bowed and I curtsied, smiling broadly as we walked towards the awaiting limo.

The valets opened the door for my father and I as we both sat down on the comfy leather seats of the limo.

"You looking stunning, Elise," my father's new assistant, Emma, complemented me.

"Ditto." I raised an eyebrow at her tight fitted cocktail dress and stylish up do.

She blushed in response making my grin grow broader.

"So, who do I have to please before I can actually have some fun?" I asked her, cutting to the chase.

My father shook his head. "You will be having no fun Elise, your definition of fun always ends up with a picture of you behaving quite un-lady like on the cover of every magazine and newspaper. That can't happen tonight," he warned slowly.

"Come on Dad! A girl has to have fun somehow," I shrugged innocently. "Well Emma? Since I'm the people pleaser...?"

"Since you won't know who half of the people there are I'll introduce you to a few," she said getting straight to business. "Make small talk and they will most likely introduce you to other important people and so on. Just be sure you are polite, graceful, elegant and well-behaved. Try not to drink more than two glasses of champagne, take slow sips, small bites, chew-"
