My cousin Kay and I were always close to each other. We were like best friends and told each other everything. Kay’s mother was my aunt; also my mother’s younger sister. Kay’s real father died in a car accident that happened one rainy night. But Kay’s mother ended up getting married again three years later. I was two years older than Kay.Both of our personalities were kind of similar but Kay was much wiser than anyone we knew. And that’s why I always came to her for serious advice. Kay’s real name was Kanani. She wasn’t a big fan of her name so she preferred to be called Kay. She had thick curly hair like mines but her hair color was a light honey brown. She also had these big bright gray eyes like her father. The first couple of days we just talked about how much we missed each other, how much fun we were gonna have, and then once the two of us hung out by the lake we began to catch up.

“So how many months are you?” Kay asked.

“Three months.”

“Are you gonna find out the gender of the baby?”

“No, I want it to be a surprise.”

“I see a ring on your finger so I guess you and the father are planning on getting married.”

I remembered I had the ring on my finger.

“Oh no this is just a promise ring. I should have left this at home.”  I said.

“Why?”

“Well Darion and I aren’t together anymore.”

“Why not? You two are about to have a child together.”

“Yeah I know, but he made out with his ex girlfriend that had been trying to make a move on him since college. Kay I really need your advice right now.”

“Let me guess; you still love Darion and you don’t know rather you should be with him or not.”

“You’re such a know-it-all.” I replied.

We both began to laugh.

“But you’re right”. I answered.

“That’s something you have to decide for yourself.” She answered.

“I really miss being with him, but every time I think about him or get a text from him those images of him kissing his ex continue to play in my head.”

“What else has this guy done besides kissed his ex while he was with you?” She asked.

I thought about it.

“Nothing really; except recently I noticed that his character is starting to change, but he’s only acting that way because he’s upset.”

“Does he want to be with you?”

“Yeah. He sends me a text every morning and every night.”

I decided to tell Kay everything that happened since Darion and I were together.

Once Kay had all the information she was able to be her wise self and give me the wisdom I needed to hear.

“Honestly Jazzy, he doesn’t sound like a bad guy to me. Don’t get me wrong, what he did was wrong but he owned up to his mistake. I do see where you’re coming from with it being hard for you to trust him, but obviously a part of you still believes in him because you’re wearing the promise ring, and even his ex could see that he truly does love you so that should say something. What happened with him and his ex could have been a lot worst than just making out if you know what I mean. You can’t let one bad thing take out all of the good. You love him and he loves you; so when he sends those text messages that’s what you should think about. Think about all of the good times you two had together. Never let the bad outweigh the good. That’s how relationships are broken.”
