Remus woke up at 1 o'clock in the morning to a scream. It was horrifying, painful to the ears, and it had come from downstairs.
"NOOOOO!" The voice screamed. Remus sat up. He let the memories of last night flow through his head. He had let Sirius stay here....Sirius!
Remus rushed downstairs to find Sirius on the floor, still asleep but not sleeping peacefully, tossing and turning and the blanket was still on the sofa. He screamed again, and all the blood drained from Remus' face as he did so. It was worse down here, seeing Sirius so vulnerable. He had seen elated Sirius, angry Sirius, happy Sirius, but not sad Sirius, not pained Sirius. Not the sleeping man that lay in front of him. Remus picked the man up and hauled him onto the sofa, wrapping a blanket around him and going back to sleep upstairs.
Remus woke up next at three in the morning, to more screaming. He trudged downstairs, and found Sirius, yet again, on the floor. This time he was still, his hands clenched around himself, and shivering. The blanket wasn't enough, and it had always been cold down here. Remus somehow picked the man up and took him upstairs. He didn't have a guest bedroom so he put Sirius on his bed, pulled the duvet over him and lay on top of the covers with a blanket wrapped round him. Sirius didn't make another sound for the rest of the night.
In the morning, Remus was the first to wake and plodded downstairs to make tea and breakfast. 10 minutes later he returned with a tray full of food and drink. Sirius sat up and blinked as Remus flicked the light switch and light came shining into the room.
"Remus?" Sirius croaked.
"Hey Sirius."
"Wait what am I doing here? You....I...what happened?"
"You we're having violent nightmares, screaming. At three in the morning I moved you in here because you looked cold and you didn't make another noise all night."
"Oh god, Remus, I'm so sorry...I really should have told you about the nightmares." Sirius put his head in his hands. He was so pathetic, why had he agreed to stay, he was worthless and Remus would never want to see him again, yet alone invite him to Hogwarts, and then he and James were going to be there and he was going to be alone for the whole of his life.
"It's okay, Sirius." Remus yawned, "Come on, we need to pack."
It turned out that Remus didn't need to pack much, and that they needed things from James and Sirius' stuff was at James' mother's house.
Sirius cast his patronus and send it to Mrs Potter, saying "Dear Mrs Potter. We would like to come to your house, I need some of my stuff from Hogwarts. We will explain when we get there. I'll bring James too."
They Flooed to James' and picked him up without a protest from either him or Lily. From there they travelled to James' Mother's house. His mother welcomed them into the house cheerily.
"Hey Mrs Prongs." Sirius announced.
"Hello, Mrs Potter." Remus addressed the woman nervously.
"Remus, Remus." The woman brushed down his jumper and smiled.
"As I said, we are here for some of my Hogwarts stuff." Sirius flounced around the room.
"Yes, I remember. Why do you need that stuff?"
"Oh didn't James tell you?" Sirius glanced to James as he shook his head quickly.
