They opened the Potions classroom with a bang, the children were already in there and were having the register done, by none other than Professor Snape. Slughorn sat by his desk, his eyes peeking over the pierce of parchment to see the new people. He smiled. James and Sirius walked in with wide grins, Remus tagged along behind. As they did so, Severus scowled.
"I see our new...Professors have joined us," Snape said distastefully.
James and Sirius bowed in co-ordination. Remus put his head in his hands. All the students chuckled at the display.
Slughorn stood up. "Severus, on with the register please. Potter, Black, pull up some chairs. Lupin, it's nice to finally see you again, where have you been?"
Thankfully, it was meant as a rhetorical question, but the panic on Remus' face was clearly blatantly obvious, and Slughorn chuckled. Sirius and James did as told, and soon the trio were sitting next to Slughorn, watching Snape take the register.
'Hamish Walmes' marked the end to the register, and Snape sat on the other side of Slughorn. It was quite like two opposing parties, with Slughorn the judicator. The students were amused. One took a picture with a muggle camera, and it must have been a great one. Slughorn grinning, James and Sirius stubbornly smiling, Remus with his head in his hands and Snape scowling.
"Today, children, we will be making the Forget-For-Now Potion," Slughorn announced. James, Sirius and even Severus turned to stare at Remus. Remus smiled. How ironic did things have to get.
"Severus, would you mind explaining what this potion is?"
"The Forget-For-Now potion is a particularly dangerous concoction. When used, the drinker is normally accompanied by another. This other will say a few words - a trigger, which will allow the person to remember what they had forgotten. Let's say, I made Professor Slughorn forget he set Homework. The trigger could be anything, a word, a phrase. If I later said that, and only I, the memory would be restored," Snape explained, staring at the children with no emotion.
"What, so I could forget you? Why don't we try it, Padfoot?" James jumped up, wand at the ready.
"Of course, Prongs! Now," Sirius grabbed the book out of Snape's hand, "The Ingredients don't look too complex, I'm sure we can handle it Prongs!"
The class burst into laughter as Snape fumed and Remus sighed and put his head in his hands.
"Sirius. James. Please." He moaned.
"What, Moony? We're just trying to inject some life into this class! If Snivellus is going to teach it, then it's never going to be fun," James protested.
"Now, now, Prongs, Padfoot, settle down and students, please go and collect the ingredients. You four," Slughorn pointed to the four assistant professors, "go and see if they need any assistance in making it."
The class collected their potion ingredients and started to make the potion diligently. James and Sirius started to follow after Snape as if he was a mother duck, flapping their arms with innocent little expressions on their faces. Snape wandered around the whole classroom trying to shake them off, even into the potions cupboard. After coming out of the closet, Snape stormed up to Slughorn.
While they were doing this, Remus Lupin acted exactly like an assistant professor would - he aided the students. Many of them seemed puzzled, and he didn't need them to put up their hands together him to help them. It was in his nature to be the teacher. The students would just look up at him apologetically and he would smile and walk over, trying his best to explain what they might have gone wrong. He went through the instructions with him, trying to communicate that although he wasn't particularly skilled at this, he was doing his very best.
"Wow, Professor! Thanks! You are pretty good at this, did you do Potions as a student?" One asked. Remus scratched his neck and said, "Err....I didn't like it much, I preferred Defence Against the Dark Arts, I find that class particularly fun."
"I think you would be an excellent teacher here, you should stay and be the DADA teacher."
"Erm...maybe one day. Not yet, I'm not quite qualified."
"I'm sure Dumbledore would let you in if you asked him!"
"Go on, please!" Another begged.
"We'd really like you!"
Soon the whole class was surrounding Remus, begging him to ask Dumbledore, and he blushed a shade of pink as even James, Sirius and Severus turned to stare at the throng of students that were encasing the confused, Obliviated wizard.
"Students, please. Leave Professor Moony alone." Remus winced, rather disliking the idea of being called Moony, in a school where he was an authority figure....partially. James and Sirius might find it endearing, liking to be worshipped and almost back as students, but Remus had had a life, a life as a teacher in a muggle school and he wasn't a student anymore.
"I would...rather Professor Lupin," Remus corrected, feeling embarrassed as he corrected the man.
"LUPIN! LUPIN! LUPIN! LUPIN!" The students chanted.
"Please, be quiet," Remus mumbled.
Slughorn glanced at him as if wondering if he was being serious. They weren't going to quieten from one mumble.
The chant went on for a little longer and then Remus decided to put a stop to it.
"QUIET!"
And they were. They were instantly silent, in awe of the man who had shouted like that.
It was just the teacher in him.
After that sudden outburst, the class got on with the potion diligently, only whispering Professor Lupin every couple of minutes. He assisted them and Slughorn watched from behind with a smile as the four, despite not knowing it, actually worked together. Remus was the glue, he had to be. There was no way that Severus would work with James and Sirius, but when Remus had shouted, they had all looked at him in fear and...obeyed. James had tried to play the fool at the start, but a glare from 'Professor Lupin' was all it took.
Slughorn was beginning to think the students were correct. Remus would really make a good DADA teacher, one day.
