"Nathan are you doing any better?" I opened the door to my room, Nathan asleep on my bed. I had let him sleep there while I slept downstairs.
I shook my head and walked over to him, shaking him awake. His eyes opened by a small amount, "What's up?" He asked sleepily.
"School is up." I said to him.
"What's the day..?" His eyes went wide.
"The second."
"Shit!" He yelled as he shot up from the bed, "What happened at the game?"
"I don't know I was taking care of you." I stated bluntly. He was more worried about the game he missed then his own health.
"Listen. When you get to practice I want you to sit out for half of it. The other half you can participate in activities, but you are not allowed to force yourself or put in much effort."
"What?" He looked at he as if I was insane, "You've got to be kidding."
"No. You need to heal. I will be dropping in on practice so if you don't listen. Consequences." He knew what I had meant. I had made a deal with the captain of the basketball team that if I asked him to bench Nathan the captain would.
He sighed sadly and said 'fine'. Then he went to his room and got ready for school. I went through my normal routine, change, hair, teeth, then getting my stuff together.
I met Nathan downstairs a few minutes later and we walked to the school. I had a weird feeling in my chest as we got close to the school. Why had it felt so weird? It smelt just as Nathan's magic had yesterday. That did make any sense.
The second we passed through the doors I felt something clawing at my throat. One breath of the air made me sick. I nearly fell over but caught myself, taking a couple more breaths to try and adjust to the smell.
"You okay?" Nathan asked, noticing my weird behavior.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I said quickly. "See ya." I walked off to my first period. If I had stayed there any longer he would have figured out that something was actually wrong.
I sat down in my seat and looked out the window. Mrs D hadn't started class yet so I used the time to contemplate a bit.
Where was Kohanna? I looked at her seat which was empty. I frowned, was she going to be missing again? The door opened and Kohanna ran in and collapsed on her seat. So she wasn't going to go missing again.
The school still smells like danger. That's strange, I thought. It didn't make sense, a smell shouldn't linger this long or get worse. I took a deep breath, suppressing a cough.
I looked at Evans. Maybe he was the cause? I noticed the smell after he threw that football at me. No, it couldn't be. It couldn't have progressed that quickly.
Evans looked over to me and smirked. I looked away. I didn't like him, not one bit. It was as if he knew I was thinking about him and that's why he looked over.
I turned over to look at Kohanna, who had been staring at me for about two minutes. Why had she been looking at me for so long? She immediately turned away after my thought, face slightly red.
I shrugged, once again having to do everything in my power to stop myself from passing out from the smell. The morning passed quickly. Lunch came. I met up with Nathan in the hallway and we walked to the Lunch room. William and Micheal joined him moments later, then we all walked out to the hill and sat on the grass.
"Hey this might be a weird question," I started. The three looked over at me. "Do you think any things weird with Evans?"
"Football coach?" Micheal asked.
"I don't think so." William stated. "And yes Micheal."
"You mean the bastard that nearly hit you yesterday?" Nathan questioned.
I nodded. I didn't find it that weird that they had all nearly instantly said that nothing was wrong with Evans, I think I was a little more interested in how William didn't seem sad.
His demeanor had changed, it was weird. Then I realized what it changed to, worry.
"Katsura-" He shook his head, "Akemi, are you okay?"
I gave him a questionable glance, "What do you mean?"
"I don't know..." He muttered, "You just seem different. Like somethings wrong."
Yes. Something was wrong. And the thing that was wrong was the smell. The scent that stung my lungs.
"Everything's fine." I grinned. I wasn't going to drag them into my problems.Lunch passed quickly, I hadn't been hungry so Micheal had gladly taken my lunch. I had just thought about what the smell was caused by.
The bell rang and we got up and went back inside. Somehow the smell had gotten even worse. I stood still for a minute before Micheal said he had to make a couple stops before class and ran off, dragging William with him.
For some reason it felt as if I could no longer breathe in the school. I started coughing, falling to my knees, holding my throat.
"Akemi!?" Nathan yelled. He knelt down beside me, I could just barely smell his worry in the deathly scent covering the school.
"Hey! Breathe Akemi!" He yelled again. But what if breathing was the problem?
"Vacani.." I muttered the second I could. Vacani was a medicine for wolves. It was used to dim wolves senses if smell for a short period of time. I believe that dad had said he put it in my medicine box in the nurses office.
"Vacani? Hang on." Nathan seemed to understand as he picked me up and carried my to the nurses office.
The nurse was currently on lunch break, which had started a couple of minutes ago. He laid me down on a bed and ran over to my box and opened it.
"Holy crap why do you have so many?" There has been a lot of illnesses for Wolves so my dad got as much working medicine for me as he could.
"Raihya." I said softly, my throat hurting from coughing. "Vacani Raihya." I gave the full name of the medicine. He quickly pulled it out and took out a pill and gave it to me. I gulped it down instantly.
The smells around me started to fade as the medicine started to work. The only thing bad about it was about how hard it was to move when I'm first given the medicine.
"What's going on?" I couldn't move my head but I knew from the voice it was the nurse.
"I just gave Akemi Vacani Raihya." Nathan told her.
"Vacani Raihya? Smell dimming medicine? Why would she need that right now?" The nurse asked.
"I don't know," Nathan answered.
"I asked him to." I said softly, not able to speak well.
I heard the nurse sigh, "Nathan go on to class. Akemi will be fine here."
Nathan nodded and walked out of the room as I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
