Chapter two - Jughead tries, tries and tries again.
River walked down the stairs into the dining room. She had come back from work and had changed into her pjs before dinner.
Owen took in her appearance before laughing at his sister.
"Are you channeling your inner yellow power ranger?" Owen asked looking at his sisters yellow pjs and River glared at him before grabbing a set of plates and helping her mother set the table.
"Leave your sister alone, Wen," Eva Sinclair said sternly while setting the table. She was still in her uniform. Eva Sinclair was a doctor and Riverdale hospital.
She was from Asian decent and her long black hair was pulled into a high bun, she and her husband, Nathan Sinclair adopted River when she was one after finding out she couldn't have kids. A year later the couple adopted Owen.
Nathan Sinclair, worked was a deputy at the sheriff station, and he loved his family with all his heart. He has short black hair that was always slicked back neatly.
"Your sister looks great, where can I get a pair of them super cool pjs?" Nathan said while ruffling River's hair.
"Jesus, dad. I did not spend one hour with the hair straighteners this morning for you to ruffle my hair," River said while straightening out her hair.
"Jughead is coming for dinner," Owen said and Nathan and Eva both nodded.
"Well, hopefully he's here soon. Dinner is going to be ready in three minutes," Eva said while walking back into the kitchen. Seconds later the doorbell rang and Owen went to answer it.
"Hey, yellow power ranger, we need another plate," Nathan Sinclair said to River and River glared at him before walking into the kitchen to retrieve the plate.
"Hey Mr S," Jughead said while walking into the dining room and Nathan smiled at him.
"Hey, Jughead, how have you been?" Mr Sinclair asked and Jughead shrugged before sitting down on the table next to Owen.
"How has my dad been?" Jughead asked Nathan and he just shrugged.
"He's doing alright, got him some cool magazines today to keep him occupied," Nathan said, he was an old friend of FP's and is trying his hardest to make FP's time in prison bearable.
"Are you allowed to have favourites?" Jughead asked and Nathan smiled at him.
"Nope. Hat off, Eva is in a bad mood," Nathan warned him and Jughead nodded before taking his beanie off.
"I am not in a bad mood." Eva said walking into the dining room with a tray of lasagna, River following behind her carrying a bowl of salad.
"Hello Jughead," Eva said greeting him and Jughead smiled.
"Hello, Mrs Sinclair," Jughead said to her before looking at River.
"Hello, Yellow Power ranger," Jughead said teasing River and River rolled her eyes at him before sitting down at the dining room table opposite Owen.
"So, I heard Riverdale is legalising same sex marriage," Owen said while serving himself some lasagna.
"They are?" Nathan asked and River nodded.
"It's about time Riverdale caught up with the rest of the world," River said and her mother scoffed.
"I think same sex marriage is ridiculous," Eva said and River rolled her eyes.
"Really Mrs Sinclair? You don't think people should be able to marry the person they love regardless of their sexuality?" Jughead asked her before stuffing some lasagna in his mouth and Eva nodded.
"Marriage is between man and women," Eva said and River frowned.
"Sounds homophobic," Owen said to his mother and Eva shot him a look.
"I'm not a homophobe. I'm a traditionalist," Eva said and River laughed humourlessly.
"Really, a traditionalist? Is that what they are calling homophobes nowadays?" Owen asked and Nathan rolled his eyes at his son.
"Owen," Nathan warned but Owen ignored him.
"Mom, you say you are a traditionalist but you are a woman of Punjabi decent married to a white man. If you were a real traditionalists won't you be married to someone else?" Owen continued and Eva shrugged.
"But I still married a man. Not a women. So in a sense, I am a traditionalist." Eva said and River awkwardly looked down at her plate. Jughead noticed this and tried to change the subject.
"So, Mrs Sinclair, saved any lives today?" Jughead asked and before Eva could reply Owen spoke again.
"I never thought I would have a homophobe as a mother," Owen said and Eva shrugged while Nathan Sinclair just ate his lasagna in silence.
"Better than a homosexual," Eva retorted and River gasped.
"So, the lasagna, what kinda meat did you use?" Jughead said trying to change the subject again.
"Homosexuals are more open minded than homophobes," Owen said and Eva shrugged again.
"Lasagna has always been one of my favourite dishes. Mrs Sinclair could you give me the recipe so when my mother remembers that she has a son, she can cook it?" Jughead asked trying to change the subject for a third time.
"Look, Wen, the holy books say man and women," Eva said ignoring Jughead and Owen shrugged and River awkwardly played with her salad.
"I also like Spaghetti, River don't you like spaghetti?" Jughead asked her desperately trying to change the subject and River shrugged.
"The holy books also said no sex-" Owen said but Jughead interrupted him.
"Mr S, help," Jughead asked Nathan desperately looking at him with pleading eyes.
"Honey, did you make desert?" Nathan asked his wife and Eva nodded before standing up and walking into the kitchen and Jughead and River let out a breath of relief.
