John
I blinked awake.
The spot next to me on the mattress was bare, the only evidence that someone had been lying there being a crinkled pillow, crumpled sheets, and all of the blankets on my side of the bed over top of me. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, yawned, then sat up and looked around.
Mom and Alex weren't in the van. We were parked, and the van was completely turned off. There appeared to be a rest stop outside.
I looked down at my watch, which read 3:46 AM in soft green analog digits. They must be in the rest stop, I thought to myself as I stood up and got out of the car, slipping my shoes on so I could quickly use the bathroom.
I did indeed find my boyfriend, cussing out the vending machine.
"This goddamn son of a bitch just stole a quarter from me!" he muttered, digging into his purse. "Mother Trucking vending machines, we didn't have those back on Nevis, they think they're so goddamn fancy, with their motherfu—"
"There are children nearby," my mother, who stood nearby, said, stifling her giggles with a fist on her mouth.
Alex looked around, confused. "No there aren't."
"Well, you aren't exactly an adult, mister 'I want a juice box', are you?"
"Shut up," he muttered. "Juice boxes are good."
They eventually noticed me and gave a little wave, then Alex proceeded to continue swearing at the vending machine until it caved in and gave him his juice box.
"I think your boyfriend needs a little maintenance," Mom whispered to me as we watched him struggle to open the cap. "He's not exactly what you would call an 'adult'."
"He loves this," I said as he swore at the juice cap. "You can see it in his eyes. I'm not gonna ruin it for him."
He eventually got the cap to open, and he happily took drinks from the juice, grinning like a kid on Christmas.
I smiled at my adorable boyfriend, who stopped drinking and wrapped his arm around my waist, kissing my cheek.
"Alrighty, let's get back on the road."
