"John," Alex said absentmindedly the day before we were set to get out of school for Thanksgiving break. "Do you remember when your father came to Herc's house at the beginning of the year, and I promised you that I would take him to court?"
I searched my brain and remembered. "Yeah, why?"
He held up a piece of orange fluorescent paper in his hand.
Notice to Appear In Court
The State of New York hereby summons John Laurens to court to take the witness stand on behalf of Child Protective Services to settle a legal dispute between himself and Henry Laurens, who is accused of Child Abuse in the first degree, neglect, and several accounts of attempted murder. John Laurens may be provided a lawyer by the Court or may hire one himself.
"Are you ready to do this?" he asked, looking into my eyes.
I took a deep breath. "Yeah. I'm ready."
