Organization is a skill that when acquired, can help you everywhere you go. It's a skill companies look for when employing individuals today.
I mean everyone likes an individual who is organized over one who isn't. I suggest you get a drawer if you like to keep physical documents of your book and get organizing.
Get a folder and label them for the following;
Deadlines: You could also think of this as Goals. Even without the help of an editor or a publisher constantly on your back, I find it a wise decision to create personal goals and deadlines for completion.
Create a list allowing for an update to the calendar if anything changes. So say something comes up, document it to this list and detail how it affects or alters your goals.
Characters: You must have a folder to document your characters. You could further divide these into sub folders; one for each major character, another for secondary characters, and one for recurring or minor characters.
Finally, you could also create a folder, containing a directory of all your characters, detailing where to find them should the need arise to locate them quickly.
If you plan on writing fiction and including stuff about aliens or races that aren't human, create a folder as well for documenting that.
Maps: About Maps.... Ill elaborate more on that. It will have a whole chapter dedicated to it but ill just talk about it a little. Any maps needed should be put in this folder for reference when writing.
Chapters: Each Chapter for your novel or book should have its folder, nicely labelled.
If preferred, you can sub categorize scenes too but honestly i find it more stressful to go that length but hey.... if you feel like categorizing it into scene would help build your story properly and you're up to that task then go ahead.
Note that creating folders for scenes is helpful for descriptive novels and all.
Research: Begin by taking note of all the questions you can ask yourself about your novel or book that you aren't sure of.
Use various researching methods and mediums such as the internet, nearby libraries or even visiting places that can provide you with the answers you'll need.
This section would contain most of the information your book would seek to build on and so research wisely and only use facts.
If not and you're creating your own theories for fiction type books, build upon them to eliminate punching of holes giving your story a solid, impenetrable foundation.
Asides from creating folders physically if you want to, you can create electronic copies just for back up and easy access if you're someone that's always on the go!
