Susan stood in the cottage, staring at the calendar pinned to the wall in the middle of her work day. It was a Wednesday, the middle of the last full week in May.
"Where has the time gone?" she asked herself.
Greg came up behind her to ask about lunch and looked at it too.
"A week from tomorrow is June first," he observed.
"I know. Matthew's birthday was two weeks ago ... and somehow I feel like I should still be planning for that instead of Memorial Day weekend. I can barely remember what we did for his birthday this year," Susan told him.
"Only because he chose to spend the actual day with Ashley instead of with the family," Greg told her. "That is normal, Susan. That is what children eventually do when they become adults."
"I know," Susan assured him. "But at nineteen, he still doesn't seem all that old to me."
"He is not ... and he won't, no matter how old he gets," Greg advised her. "But the truth is, Matthew is an adult. I was married, living on my own and had a child at that age," Greg reminded her.
"I remember," Susan told him. "You've told me about that, many times."
"I say it now only to give you some perspective on the way your own children are growing up," Greg said.
Susan nodded as she thought about it, still studying the calendar.
"Neil and Rosemary's wedding is coming up," Greg said as he observed the notation on the 25th of June. "It's only a month away ... to the day."
"It will be here before you know it," Susan agreed. "I'm supposed to take Melody and Jessie for fittings for their flower girl dresses this Saturday."
"We'll be certain to attend Sabbath services locally so you can," Greg promised. "What are we doing for Memorial Day this year? Didn't you say you were planning something?"
"I'm trying to. I thought for a change we could invite Richard, Marion and the twins to join us here to use the pool in the afternoon with a barbeque afterwards," Susan suggested. "The twins are going to be three soon, so they're probably old enough to enjoy the pool. It might be fun."
"With the natural beach entry our pool has, I'm sure they will. I think we all will," Greg said.
Susan nodded as she studied the page of the calendar for June, looking at what lay ahead between now and the wedding.
"Did you notice, Aaron's high school graduation is the week after Memorial Day?" Greg commented.
"Only one week later? Don't Aaron and Jake get out of school the same time as our kids?" Susan wondered.
"I thought they do. When is the last day of school?" Greg asked and Susan pointed to the date on the calendar.
"So the second Friday in June," Greg said.
"Yes. Matt is moving home again the weekend in between. His finals are next week," Susan reminded him.
"So he is. If Aaron graduates the following Friday that makes three weekends in a row where we have something planned," Greg said.
"Isn't it four? Isn't the wedding the weekend after that?" Susan asked.
"I believe there is a weekend in between ... Father's Day," Greg observed as he looked at the calendar more closely.
"I'm glad we checked," Susan said.
"So am I," Greg said. "So we have Memorial Day weekend, Matt moves the one after that, Aaron's graduation, Father's day, then the wedding." He arched a brow appreciatively. "That makes for a very full month."
