Despite the late night the night before, the need to be up at the normal hour in order to get the children to school kept Susan from sleeping in the way she would have liked to on Friday morning. She pulled herself from bed at 6 a.m., dressed and made her way to the children's wing to get Zack and Jessie up. To Susan's surprise, Zack was already out of bed, staring out the window.
"Good morning," Susan said as she stood in the doorway to his room.
"Hi Mom ... I mean good morning," Zack said.
"Did you set your alarm?" Susan wondered.
"No. I couldn't sleep ... so I'm up. I was just about to get dressed," Zack said.
"Why couldn't you sleep?" Susan wondered.
"Dreams," Zack said pointing vaguely at his head.
"Memories? Or the normal sort of dreams?" Susan asked.
"I dun know. I'm not sure I recognized it, so I'm trying to figure it out. Kelly was in it," Zack said.
"Pray about it," Susan suggested. "Then maybe something will come to you about it while you go through your day."
"Yeah, maybe," Zack said.
Susan smiled at her son, then left him to dress.
Jessie was much more difficult to convince to begin her day.
"It's too early, Mama!" she protested.
"It's not, it only feels that way because we were up so late last night," Susan said.
"Ooo," Jessie moaned. "I don't like this part of being Jewish."
"Well, today is Friday, so you can sleep later tomorrow. But for now it is time to get up," Susan said.
Despite her protests, Jessie was at the breakfast table a short time later. So was Zack. They ate with Susan and left for school right on time.

"Hello?" Julie's voice reached Susan in the kitchen before she did.
"Good morning, Julie. Do you want coffee?" Susan offered.
"Sure," Julie told her. "Are your kids up?"
"Zack and Jessie just left for school," Susan said.
"They're not on Spring Break?" Julie asked in surprise.
"No. Ours was last week," Susan explained. "Easter was late this year so the break didn't coincide."
"Oh, poor kids! I remember having to do that sometimes when I was young," Julie said in a sympathetic tone.
Susan smiled as she brought Julie her coffee. She had nothing to compare it to. She'd never experienced a Seder during her youth. Susan was still trying to figure out what to say to keep the conversation going when Greg appeared in the doorway to the kitchen, joining them.
"Is there coffee?" he asked looking a bit blurry eyed.
"Yes. It's ready," Susan said.
"Thank you," Greg told her.
"Why are you up?" Susan asked. "Are you working today?"
"No, however we left quite a mess in the cottage last night. I didn't want you to take on the task of cleaning up on your own," Greg said.
"Is Melody up?" Susan asked.
"She wasn't when I looked," Greg said. "That's not surprising. She stayed awake far later last night than I expected she would."
