Greg and Susan walked out of the hospital hand and hand, and to Greg's astonishment Susan was smiling. She turned her face up towards the July sun, breathing in the fresh air.
"Do you know, you can smell the ocean from here?" Susan remarked.
"It's not that far away," Greg told her. "Do you need to take a walk?"
"On the beach?" Susan questioned.
"That's what I had in mind. I know it often helps you," Greg reflected.
"It helps you too," Susan reminded him.
"It does when the seriousness of the situation calls for it. This one certainly qualifies," Greg said.
Susan nodded. "We can, if you'd like. But personally, I was thinking of saving that particular walk on the beach for tomorrow ... and then, I'd like to make a special trip to the beach north of here."
"To a particular one?" Greg asked.
"The one I took Stephen to just after Mom died. It's not as crowded as the beach close to here, and it has those dramatic rocks out in the sand, right at the shoreline. And sometimes, in the mornings, the fog lingers there," Susan said.
"Is that important?" Greg wondered.
"It speaks to faith for me. To be able to hear the ocean without seeing it, to have no view of the water aside from the little bit that reaches the shore around my feet, but you know it is there ... that feels like what my dreams are to me. They are little bits coming to me from heaven. I know after tomorrow Melody will be there ... and I suspect what she says is absolutely true."
"What part?" Greg asked.
"That even then she will be the messenger she has always been. She may visit us in our dreams ... like before," Susan said.
"Before she was born," Greg remembered.
"Yes. She was the messenger on the road, showing us the way. She helped us to decipher the Lord's plans for our lives," Susan said.
"She did that ... but then, she has always done that, even during her life with us here," Greg recognized.
"Yes, she has. It was fascinating to hear Bert and Jessie talking to her earlier today, before you and Matt arrived," Susan said.
"Oh? What did they say?" Greg asked.
"Bert knows Melody, of course. But he knew her best in another life," Susan said.
"Which life?" Greg asked.
"The one with the Master's House, then again during their last one. He was trying to verify his memories from the life when they all lived in New York," Susan said.
"Did he find out what he wanted to know?" Greg asked curiously.
"In part," Susan said. "He seems to think now it is by the Lord's hand that next year he will be living in New York with Shelly. He feels it is significant that he will begin his service to the Lord there."
Greg arched his brow. "Does he expect Jessie will be with him?"
"He knows it's a possibility, since you and Shelly are appearing in the same play. I suspect he is hopeful that will be the case," Susan said.
"Have we decided that is what we want to do?" Greg wondered.
Susan furrowed her brow. "Ask me after tomorrow? I'm not ready to think too much about what our life will be like without Melody just yet. It was hard enough trying to explain to her the role of a funeral in remembering those who have gone."
