Although the Abernathys stayed in Oakland until Sunday the weekend Noah was born to visit longer with Alan, Cindy, Olivia and the new baby, they only stayed until midafternoon. They were home again in Southern California in time for supper on Sunday evening.
"Sometimes our trips to Oakland are very fast," Zack remarked as they walked into the house.
"And next weekend it will be even faster," Greg told him. "I propose we make it a one day trip. We will fly up very early on Saturday morning. Rent a car to get to the synagogue in Oakland in time for the service. Stay for the day afterwards, then fly home Saturday afternoon or evening."
"It would make it a long day, but that way we wouldn't need to pack or take any luggage," Susan said. "We also wouldn't need a hotel."
"We may still want a change of clothes for after the service, but it wouldn't be absolutely necessary," Greg said.
"If that's all we're taking, we could probably put it all in one bag," Zack said.
"We could," Susan agreed. "Where are you going?" Susan asked when Zack headed towards his room. "Do you have homework?"
"Not exactly. I was going to work on my college applications this weekend ... before we decided to go to Oakland. I still need to get them sent in, so I should probably do that," Zack said.
"Did you get the form for your transcripts from school?" Susan asked.
"Yeah, last Friday. That's why I thought I should do this," Zack explained.
Susan nodded.
"Are you going to call Matt? To ask him about Saturday?" Zack wondered.
"Yes," Susan assured him. "I'll call him before supper."

By the time supper was ready, everyone was unpacked and Susan had made her call to Matt. The family spent their time during supper talking about their plans not only for the next weekend, but also for the coming week.
"Is Matt coming with us on Saturday?" Zack asked.
"He's thinking about it. He and Ashley are also thinking of joining us for Halloween," Susan told him.
"They are?" Jessie said in surprise. "I thought Matt said he's too old to go trick-or-treating."
"He is too old, but they thought it would be fun to take Melody and Cody out together to trick-or-treat," Susan said.
"What about Richard and Marion? Are they still coming to go trick-or-treating with us too?" Greg asked.
"I'm not sure," Susan told him.
"I thought we were going with Bert and Kelly in their neighborhood this year," Jessie said.
"Do we all have to go together?" Zack wondered.
"Don't you want to?" Greg asked.
Zack shrugged. "It sounds like Matt and Ashley want to go with the little kids ... and that's cool. But they'd be really slow. I don't think Kelly and Bert will want to do that. Besides, since this is the last year I can go out, I want to cover as much ground as possible."
Greg and Susan exchanged a look.
"What do you think?" Susan asked her husband.
"Perhaps you should talk to Shelly about it, Susan. Find out what she and Kevin have in mind. I'll talk to Richard. Then depending on what we find out, one of us can speak to Barbara about their plans," Greg said.
