Alan was on the phone in the library with Rabbi Sloane when Greg, Susan, Cindy and the children returned to the house. The afternoon was waning and it would soon be time for supper. And so, after putting Melody down for a late afternoon nap, Susan went directly to the kitchen to start preparations for their meal. Cindy put Olivia to sleep in the bassinet, and came to help. Meanwhile, Greg went to check on Zack and Jessie in their rooms, leaving Alan with the privacy necessary to make his call.
"What time will Ruth and Bobby be back?" Cindy asked Susan, as her hostess began to pull things from the cabinets and the refrigerator in preparation for making dinner.
"I'm not exactly sure, since I'm not entirely certain where they've gone," Susan said. "Greg said they're trying to trigger memories."
"From here?" Cindy said in surprise.
"I think they used to live here ... sort of down near Santa Monica ... during their first life," Susan said.
Cindy stared at Susan. "Are you sure about that?"
"I think so, why?" Susan asked.
"I thought Ruth said something about being from New York ... not only in this life, but in her first one as well."
"The Stones were from New York, but from what I understand, they moved west ...a lot of people did in those days ... and they settled here, when Santa Monica was a new town. Greg helped Bobby do research on it last summer; that helped him fill in some of the details based on what he could remember," Susan explained. "They found old maps and photos in the historic archives at the downtown library that matched some of his memories."
"It must be so incredible to have proof for the things you remember. If you had that, you could be surer of the things in your memory ... those things that haunt your dreams ... really happened ... that it wasn't all just your imagination," Cindy said.
"Except, without that kind of proof, the things the Lord shows us must be accepted on faith," Susan said, "which to me is sort of the whole point to my dreams anyway."
"And you don't think it would help your faith if you could prove the places you dream about are real?" Cindy asked.
Susan paused in what she was doing. "I'm not sure, Cindy. Maybe it would. It would validate what I remember as being from the Lord instead of from the adversary. I know I've worried about that too from time to time."
"Are you still talking about the adversary?" Greg asked as he rejoined them after checking on the children.
"That was rather impressive, what we saw down at the pond," Cindy commented.
"It was," Greg agreed.
"How is Zack doing with his homework?" Susan asked her husband.
"Good ... although apparently he spent much of the afternoon on the phone with Kelly instead of studying," Greg said.
"Oh?" Susan said with a fleeting frown. "Did Zack say that?"
"No, Jessie did. Zack merely confirmed it when I asked," Greg said.
Susan cocked her head. "I suppose as long as he gets his homework done, that doesn't matter."
"As long as he doesn't get Kelly into trouble that is true; however in this instance, I'm not certain that is the case," Greg said.
"Why? What happened?" Susan asked.
"I did not pry into the details, but from what they said, there was some problem due to the length of their conversation," Greg said.
