Lena's pov
Time finally came for me to sneak out.
I got my bag stuffed with a few clothes, a whole bunch of Twinkies, bottled water, a swiss army knife and a penlight I stole, legitimately stole this time from the guard house, and fifty bucks, the only cash I have, tucked in the back pocket of my skinny jeans. By all appearances, I'm all set.
Quietly, I stepped out of the room I share with two other girls and made it through the dimly lit hallway of the dormitories. Then I sneaked out the huge double door immediately after I picked its lock, and was greeted by darkness of the night and it's cold evening breeze.
As I was about to flash open my penlight, I saw silhouettes of two guards with big flashlights roaming around. I quickly hid under a thick bush nearby and waited them out to finally pass by and go away.
Few minutes later, complete darkness dawned on me yet again. That can only mean the guards are now finally gone with their flashlights. I crawled out under the bush and skedaddled real fast across the wide open school grounds towards the northern woods.
In my rush to get away, running like a gazelle in the dark with teeny tiny penlight guiding my path, I failed to notice the tall dark figure that suddenly showed up out of nowhere. I crashed into this person, terrifying the life out of me, so much I might have screamed both of my lungs out of my throat and my heart to go with it.
But my scream was stifled by the said person's hand who covered my mouth, and the other hand grabbed me by my waist. I don't know much about self defense, but the only thing I can think of doing to defend myself was bit the hand that covers my mouth and elbow my way out of this person's grip.
"Aaaahhw!! You bit me!!" He yelped in pain.
"Jack??!!" Un-freakin-believable! "What the hell, Jack?!"
"You bit like a bloody hound! Jesus, that hurt! Why are you sneaking, running about in the dark anyway?!"
"Why are you lurking in the dark jumping on me like that, anyway?!" I retorted, "I thought you're Freddy Kruger about to slash my throat or something!!"
"I was patrolling with the guards before I rest the night off. I thought you were some burglar with that hoodie on you, up and about to vandalize the school premises," he countered back shaking off his probably sore hand, "Why are you out here running in the dark, it's past curfew hours already,"
"It's none of your business, just let me go!" I started to run off, getting away from him, going on as I have planned.
"Hey! Hey! Where do you think you're going?! I know you don't want me calling out the security on you, do you?" Jack said running after me.
I kept a fast steady run, but since this guy's long legged and agile, he caught up with me.
"Hold it right there!" He stopped in front of me, blocking my way, "Just stop for a minute alright, the direction you're going is very dangerous. There are wolves lurking about on these woods at night,"
"It's the best route for me to get away from here, and the closest one going to the city,"
"Which city? Midway or Kentwood? Why are you running away? You can get hurt out there... What are you running away from?"
"As I said, this is none of your damn business so just back off already!" I pushed him aside.
"I can't let you go," he said and suddenly grabbed me by my leg and hauled me up on his shoulders, "I'm so sorry, but I have to do this. I can't let you go,"
