Of all the things Namjoon expected when he heard the slam of his small apartment door around three in the morning, interrupting his scrolling through tumblr and almost shocking him to the point of falling out of bed, it was not his dear friend Min Yoongi kicking open his bedroom door to throw a (thankfully) paperback book at his face—barely missing causing a nasty broken nose—and scream.
He hadn't even had time to be afraid it was a robber or something before being tackled mercilessly onto the floor, one noodly leg still tangled up in his sheets.
Yoongi seized the book, slammed it onto Namjoon's chest, then lay his entire weight on the boy, effectively knocking the wind out of him.
"What the hell, Yoongi?" Namjoon spat breathlessly. Confused.
"No, you don't get to fucking ask me that, say that, not when you've—" he paused.
"Not when I've what?" Namjoon looked up Yoongi, imploring him to finish, to explain exactly why he'd broken his way into Namjoon's flat so late. (Early?)
Yoongi shook his head, and stared at Namjoon. Disappointed.
"Best friends are forever, Namjoon-ah."
He picked up the book again and held it so Namjoon could see the cover properly.
It was a beat-up, worn-out copy of How To Train Your Dragon. Namjoon's heart plummeted six feet underneath the ground.
Taehyung's favorite book.
("Joonie! Look, look, look! Eomma got me this book! She read it to me last night! It's so good! I love it so much! Joonie, do you think dragons exist? I think maybe they're all just hiding or invisible. Do you think you could find them? You can do anything, Joonie, right? Wanna help me find the dragons?")
("Joonjoonjooncomelookit'sadragonlookhernameisFelicityisn'tshesocool?")
("Hey, Joon. Where do you think the dragons are hiding? Because I swear I saw one yesterday underneath my staircase.")
("Namjoonie! Please, please, please call me back, I think there's a dragon behind me whenever I turn my back and it's going to take all my plushies. You need to come over ASAP and help me escape!")
("Namjoon, can we be Vikings for Halloween? No, wait, let's be dragons! No, wait! I can be a dragon and you can be a Viking. Or the other way around, I'm not picky!")
("Joon, look at this painting I made. It's you, see? As a dragon! See, it has mind powers because you're so smart and it's super big 'cause you're so tall and it can fly higher than anyone else except for me because I know flying's always been one of your dreams!")
("Hey, Joonie. D'you think that if I died, I'd be reborn as a dragon? ... Sorry it's so late, I just really needed to know. Call me back when you get this, yeah?")
Yoongi's expression softened, and Namjoon almost asked why. The question bubbling up in his throat, however, was cut off when Yoongi leaned forward, swiping his thumb across his cheek and wiping away the water.
When had that gotten there?
Yoongi eased himself off of Namjoon and onto the floor, then sat slumped against the bed, offering a hand to help Namjoon to the same.
His frame all but collapsed against the wooden footboard and Yoongi produced some water from who knows where and cupped underneath Namjoon's jaw, tipping the glass back a little at a time, then pushing the cup into Namjoon's hand.
