My body jerked as I gasped for air like I was deprived of oxygen for a very long time, and I felt the electric shocks flowing through my veins, waking every sleeping cell in my body. My breathing is deep and slow, my throat is rough and dry, and my mind is blank and clueless of what's going on. My eyelids were heavy like they've been shut down and forgotten for so long, but I managed to open them weakly, and I was temporarily blinded by the bright light above me. As soon as my vision adjusted to the light, I saw three women wearing white coats and masks while staring at my naked, cold, and numb body.
"Lauren Lopez, can you hear me? If you can, please blink once."
I weakly blinked my eyes once, and I tried to stand up, but I couldn't move.
"Can you move your fingers?"
I tried moving them, but everything felt numb.
"It's ok, everything's fine. It's just the effect of freezing. You'll be ok soon. I'll be giving you this shot to normalize your vital signs."
Freezing? I don't understand. She injected something into me, and I could feel my body warming up. I had no idea of what was going on. I felt them lifting my body and transferring it to a movable bed, then they started walking with it effortlessly through the hallway. Who's carrying or moving the bed?
I couldn't speak nor comprehend what was going on. The horrifying silence made my stomach churn in fear, and all I could see were the vertical blue lights and the white ceiling above me.
"She's the 105th patient, right?"
"Yes."
I heard them talking as they pushed my bed inside a room, then they lifted my body once more and transferred it to a white bed and covered me with a blanket.
"We'll be back later, Ms. Lopez. You'll be fine."
Then they left the room and shut the door. There was silence, yet there was chaos inside me. I scanned the room with my eyes. Everything was white, and I didn't know where the light was coming from since I couldn't see any fluorescent lamp. It seemed that the walls were emitting their own light. There was no furniture, just walls, like I was placed inside a big white box for quarantine. Questions kept flooding my mind endlessly when a hologram suddenly popped in front of me with a girl wearing white while smiling, then I felt the upper part of my bed rising in order for me to sit.
"Good evening Lauren Lopez, born in the year 1993 and died in the year 2012 at the age of 19."
Did I die? I shut my eyes and gritted my teeth as memories flooded my blank mind. I remembered Casper singing a song, and I remembered how I died in his arms. If I'm dead, where am I?
"You are in the Cryo Hospital, and you are the 105th patient who survived the cryopreservation. The government has finally found a cure for your disease. You will be staying in this hospital until your treatment is complete."
C-cryopreservation? My mouth trembled in fear as a memory of Casper flashed in my mind.
"Those who were diagnosed with a rare disease that didn't have a cure during their time tried the cryonics procedure where their bodies would be preserved after death, hoping that they would be revived in the future one day that has the capabilities to cure their disease."
Oh my God! Tears streamed down my face as I looked at the screen in front of me. The girl was smiling like she couldn't see my pain. I could feel the rising panic inside me as I inhaled sharply. My lips were cracked and dry, but I gathered my strength to speak.
"H-how long-- have I been dead?"
I managed to say, my voice shaking, almost breathless because of fear.
