“Unless what?” Everyone turned to the coach
“Well…” he said in a calm, yet arrogant tone “I can’t possibly know, but I thought that the President’s attitude before the game was not normal”
Mikel and David turned to him, eyebrows raised “Oh, he was just being nice…” Mikel said
“There would be a lot of time after the game for celebrations” The coach replied
“It was just a good luck toast” David said
“Toast?” Jessica interrupted, her actions faster than her thoughts “Come with me, now” she turned to David and Mikel
“W-Why?” they turned to her
“There’s only one way to find out, blood tests”
“Oh wait, I don’t like these things” Mikel said
“I’ll make sure to get a bigger needle for you then” Jessica sarcastically said, dragging them with her to a small room
“Are you allowed to do this, Jessica?” David asked
“No, but I’m sure no one can arrest me after I explain it”
“The president is an influential man, Jess. This is not things to play with. If he finds out we are suspecting he doped us, man, there will be a war”
“Who cares?” Jessica looked at them “Robert is fighting for his life because of this…”
He looked down “It is really bad, isn’t it?”
She took a deep breath “Treatable… but… not good”
Both glanced at her as she nervously took their blood. All she could think was Robert.
“There was a man here who once told me ‘can you imagine what it is like to live thinking your heart can stop at any minute?’” Jessica whispered, turning around to clean the material, after the procedure.
David put his hand on her shoulder, from behind her “He was never the same after you split up, you know?” he whispered “That Robert is gone for a long time, and only you can bring him back”
Jessica closed her eyes, the tears flooding down her face “You can go now guys…” she changed the topic “I’ll send this to the lab”
Mikel and David glanced at each other, deciding it was better not to insist.
The days went by incredibly slow and torturing. There didn’t seem to be a change. Robert was still in his unconscious state, his heart weakly beating as the doctors waited for the best time to put him into surgery again. He had, in those days, another heart failure, while his parents were in the room with him. The uproar was too much, everyone was scared, everyone’s heart broke a little with a these happenings.
A huge crowd of reporters and mainly fans had occupied the entrance of the hospital, policemen were needed for any possible occurrence.
Jessica would spend endless shifts on the hospital, only leaving occasionally so no one would suspect she knew Robert or that something had happened before between them. It was stronger than her. She felt the need to be there next to him, even though there would be no response from him.
She had barely spoken to Jude, only replied to his texts occasionally. She felt bad for him, but she couldn’t do anything else at that moment other than be at the Hospital.
Mikel and David’s blood results came out, showing exactly the same as Robert. When those words spread to the world outside, a war begun. Chelsea’s President was in serious trouble, but, being who he was, there was no way he would pull his tricks and try to fight back for his freedom.
Jessica was preparing Robert’s medication, knowing Nicole was in the room alone with him. But she had to go there anyway, so she took a deep breath before entering.
She was sitting on the tip of a chair, her body leaning to the bed, her hands softly caressing him with a heartbroken expression on her face.
A lump immediately formed in Jessica’s throat, she could not really blame her. It was easy to grow in love with Robert, and even if maybe there is much to say about their relationship, she can never doubt her love for him.
“Hey…” Nicole softly whispered as she saw Jessica. She had no idea that Jessica was Robert’s ex-girlfriend. The only time they had crossed paths was when she was drunk, she could not remember her face.
Jessica smiled sympathetically at her, working on Robert’s IV medication.
“Do you think he will be like this for a long time?” Nicole finally asked
“I don’t know… but I do believe he can listen to everyone, it is good to talk to him, motivate him” Jess smiled
Nicole looked sadly from her to Robert again “He didn’t deserve this”
“I know…” Jessica whispered
“I believed we were growing closer together, more passionate, and right then… this happened”
Jessica looked at her, not really wanting to talk.
“He never loved me” She whispered
Jessica’s eyes widened, as she spoke “He might be listening…”
“He knows I know. He told me himself.” She wiped her tears away “I know he likes me and we are really close, we make each other company, we feel good together. But he never stopped loving this other girl in his life”
Jessica gulped, wanting to run away. Her heart bumping in her chest, hard as she was trying so hard no to break down in front of Nicole.
“I kinda screwed his life, yet he welcomed me. He accepted me”
Jessica whispered “Screwed?”
Nicole took a deep breath “Well… We only got together long months after all those rumors. There was nothing before, in fact, I didn’t even know him that well…” She cried “I think I fell in love with him right away, yeah, but there was no way I was going to try and screw his relationship. But when I got drunk one day, I guess I screwed everything, and I can’t even remember.” She looked at Jessica “He never saw her again…”
Jessica gulped, this information breaking her heart into a million pieces.
“I love him…” Nicole cried “I just wish I could make him happy”
The nurse looked down, lost for words. She felt bad for the poor girl, but there was much more than that in her mind.
And regret.
“I…” Nicole stood up “I’m going to get some fresh air. Please… do not tell about this to the press, ok?”
“Nothing that happens inside here gets out” Jessica whispered, watching her leave as she finally allowed the tears to fall down her eyes.
“Hmm...” she heard some soft and low groans coming from the man in the bed.
“Robert?”
