Conflicted

The visits during that day and the next were too wearing for Robert. Everyone wanted to see and be with the player.

He had come to know the entire story of what had happened, after Nicole, his parents and teammates could not stop themselves to talk about it. It was like every topic of conversation ended up in the President and Robert’s situation.

Robert didn’t mind, he understood and wanted to know what really happened, but he got too tired to talk.

Well.

His heart condition was not stabilized.

The pain was awful.

He felt like his heart would fail him at any minute.

His heart was still weak and with a smooth MR.

He would have to go to surgery again.

And he was scared to death.

Scared of what the doctors might tell him afterwards.

He was sure his mind was working though, working hard. His thoughts would run faster and faster, it was horrible. Lying on that bed with his body weak and painful, made him think way too much.

Think about Jessica.

Oh.

He wanted to see Jessica again. He wanted to talk to her.

He thought that maybe his words to her were not the best to be said, but he didn’t even think, at the time. It was true… after such a long time crying for her he convinced himself that maybe she never loved him as much as he loved her, as much as he thought the loved him.

But he still loved her. He always did.

Nicole was an amazing girl, she was great to him, but he never really loved her. He enjoyed her company.

He always knew that his heart was taken and only belonged to one person.

And he knew his heart was weak. But he felt that with Jess around, it would never completely stop. His heart would always beat for her.

Later on that day, after dinner, Robert tried to move around in his bed, the position he was in was killing him. But the oxygen seemed to fail whenever he moved more than he was supposed to.

“F*ck” he cursed, annoyed at himself and his inability. He felt useless.

“Easy, you don’t want your heart to fail again, do you?”

He heard her voice.

Oh. Like music to his ears.

His eyes moved to look at her, she was already next to him, helping him move to a comfortable position.

He looked at her, not sure what to say.

It was one of those awkward moments.

“Better?” She finally asked

“Uhhh, I kinda… need to pee” Robert spoke

She smiled “It’s ok, you have a bladder catheter, Robert”

He frowned “I have what?” His eyes widened.

Jessica chuckled as Robert continued “Have you been messing with my penis?”

She looked down at him, smiling “Well, yeah.”

He half smiled at her, suddenly feeling a lot better to see her smile “It… doesn’t hurt, I guess”

“I’ve always told you bladder catheterization is not painful. It might be uncomfortable, but not painful” She replied

“You must touch many penises, as bad as that sounds…” He suddenly commented

Jessica giggled “Yeah, lost the count. Many women’s as well”

He smiled “That sounds interesting”

She softly poked him “Of course it does…” She rolled her eyes

Robert smiled “So… uh… how have you been?”

Jessica took a deep breath, her heart contorting every time she looked at him, wanting to hug him tight, kiss him passionately and never let go of him.

“I’m good… I got a nice job here”

“I never doubted you would be an amazing nurse, Jess” he whispered

A lump formed in her throat, the conversation was already starting to get her an emotional breakdown

“And you… how are you feeling, Robert?” She softly asked

He looked at her “I guess I can handle the pain… why does it hurt though? If I had this before… it never hurt before…”

“Well, you had a heart attack, then the surgery was not fully successful. You’re sore, your body is still adapting…”

He looked at her “I guess...”

She smiled “I know you will get through it. And you have lots of support, don’t think too much about it”

He glanced at her “I guess…” he took a deep breath “Nicole told me she thinks you are a great person” he smiled

Jessica’s eyes widened “Did she? She seems really sweet, she won’t leave your side”

“She is…” Robert looked down

“She feels sad because she says your feelings are not mutual” Jessica spoke before she could stop her own words.

Robert looked at her “They are not…” he honestly said

Jessica gulped, his amazing brown eyes so sincere. She couldn’t do this, she couldn’t let herself move forward. She had her chance, she lost it.

“Jess…” Robert whispered

“I should go… I-I got some work to…” she stepped back, looking at him extending his hand for her

“Jess…” he whispered as she was on the door. She turned back to him as he finished “You look amazingly good in that uniform…”

She managed a smile “Try to rest, Robert” she whispered before leaving the room, letting the tears finally fall.

She could not fully understand herself.

She was so conflicted.

She felt like she was falling in love with him all over again. She felt like her real feelings were never gone, and she was bombarded with them as soon as he entered back in her life.

But now it was different.

Robert had Nicole, who loved him to death. She wouldn’t dare to go in the middle of their relationship.

Besides…

She had Jude.

She would never have the courage to do such a thing to him.

“Damn you… Robert Lockhart” she whispered between her tears.

Heeey!

So, what do you think?!

I prooomise there will be more action soon!
