Chapter 40

“Wake up Keesha! Wake up!” someone shakes me. As much as I want to close my eyes and ask for another minute to sleep, I can’t; his shakes are too strong I can be off to pieces if I don’t stand up. “Come on, wake up!” he shouts.

I open my eyes slowly and to my surprise I see Valix in front of me with his hands still on top of my shoulder. What to do? I ask myself, we’re busted. I can’t deny in this state, we are caught in the act. I close my eyes once again, sigh deeply, hoping that I’m just dreaming; but unfortunately, I’m not. He’s still in front of me, with his gun on his belt and spear at his back.

“Uhm…” I try to gather my senses, figuring out excuses to cover everything. But before I can think of lame alibi, he interrupts me and helps me get into my feet.

“You should leave now. Get your brother out of here before they see you. Move, now!” he orders. And I’m deeply shock. How did he know? I stare at him with curiosity. “I’m not a fool Keesha. I know things. Did you ever think I allow students to be at the hallways because of some home sickness excuse?”

“But, your job is to guard the underground laboratory, right? Why did you let me be in the first place?” I ask him with pure curiosity.

“There’s no time for explanations. A student tipped the Council about Professor Wood’s experiments and they’ve sent the Genesis to investigate.” He informs.

This is terrible. Sending the Genesis in the school means they probably know something in here is dangerous that common guards cannot defeat. They know that something like James exist. But how?

Meanwhile, as I run across the laboratory to find something worth keeping in our escape, James keeps on growling and growling like there’s no tomorrow. He’s uneasy. “He may be a hybrid, but just like any animals, he can sense danger.” Professor Wood explains. “Always keep your eyes on him Keesha. We still don’t know his capabilities when he’s in danger.” He adds.

“I’m pretty sure he’d kill enough men to protect his baby sister.” Edward butts in as he packs a bag with biscuits and water. I look at him in disgust. “What? We may survive those creepy soldiers, but can we survive starvation?” he asks me.

“Sages aren’t extinct, so yes, we can survive starvation.” I answer him sarcastically. But, it’s the truth, people of Sapius are still breathing even though we face hunger every day.

Valix claps his hands when we’re all ready. Edward has all the foods and drinks that can keep us moving for days. I have a pile of syringe guns and the serums, blood bags and a pair of jeans and shirt for James. But Professor Wood is still in his seat, tapping the table in a hurry manner. “Professor Wood, let’s go.” I shout. It’s not probably a good idea to shout, but I can’t help it.

“I can’t. I need to delete all the data about the experiments. They must not know anything about it, especially your case.” He says in a serious tone. “Even if they find out about the information about James’s hybrid mutation experiment and recreate someone like him they can’t succeed without you, your blood specifically.  You’re the only person I know who have that kind of immune system. Without your immune cells purifying the serum, there will be no antidote to keep the balance of both human and mutated beast. They need you more than they want James. Just leave me here, okay? They won’t kill me until they get what they want.”

“Kill?” I ask tremblingly, “Why would there be killing?”

“Now that Kentron knew about James, they will not stop until they have him. They’ll do whatever it takes just to have a successful hybrid mutant backing their district, even it means getting their hands dirty. And the Council is still composed of six districts, I’m sure one or two will be interested in having James at their security too. You and your brother is the most advanced and critically successful weapon science ever created. Blood will definitely flow just to have you both.”
