Chapter 42
James begin to slow down, I think he’s tired. He can’t continue like this; he’s hurt and we’re too heavy for him. “Find some place to rest. There’s still a night train to follow and it’s safer for us to travel at night.” I say to James.
He walks slowly this time, checking every possible place to rest. He sees this big dead oak tree near the ends of the Dark forest, near enough to see the trains passing by but safe not to be seen by passengers too. He’s really smart to find a place like this.
I examine Edward’s wounds and from the looks of it, it’s not getting any better. “Don’t close your eyes.” I order Edward. I’m afraid for his condition. I feel like if he closes his eyes, it will not open again. I don’t want him to die. I don’t want anyone to die anymore.
I lay down next to James with Edward sitting right next to me. “Are you okay?” I ask James. Krys had speared his one leg earlier. James only moans for answer. He closes his eyes and rest. I keep my eyes open, guarding these two boys as they rest. “Please, don’t sleep.” I plead Edward.
He nods. He breathes heavily and coughs in pain every time he moves his body to make himself fully awake.
Five trains already passed and it’s getting dark. Owls start to sing songs of night tales and I know that it’s a sign for us to leave. “Let’s go.” I shake them both.
We wait for the last night train patiently in the dark. I notice that James’ blue eyes light up like a glow in the dark stickers; it’s scary and amazing at the same time. Then, the train comes out from south and right away, James run to catch it up. We follow the train up to last station. “We need to find a cracked up building with a ‘whizzes’ sign on it.” I say.
Following Valix’s orders is the only way I feel that we are going somewhere. It’s better for them too to think that I have a plan, instead of giving them worries about nothingness.
I jump off from James to lessen his baggage and walk at the street. Rumford Lyme is the industry part of Kentron. All factories, mines, research laboratories and stations for trains and buses can be found here. This is the busiest part of Kentron but not until the Mixed Blood rebels take over and shut the place. The streets are now cracked; some have wide holes that can directly transport you to hell. It feels like this place is isolated from the beginning. There is no sign of life in here.
There are no sign of Mixed Blood rebels either making me more suspicious than calm.
We walk and walk, looking for a cracked old building, but all I see are ruins of buildings that are not safe to walk in anymore. The wind blows and dust fills the entire place. My eyes itch and my wound stings as the dusts tickle my skin. Edward clutches James’ fur tightly that it hurts my brother. He feels more pain than I do which makes me feel guilty about getting them here.
“There!” I point at the building few steps from where we stand. James runs excitedly and in a minute, we reach the building.
I stare at the building and it looks haunted; creepy and alarming. We enter the building which from the looks of it was a factory. I help Edward down and lay him to the floor. He’s shaking badly and he’s as hot as a burning coal. I inject the pain killers at his leg to lessen the ache he’s feeling, but it doesn’t help. He’s temperature keeps getting higher and higher, and he hasn’t eaten anything for the whole day. If this continues, he’ll die.
“Edward,” I whisper. “Hide somewhere else.” I then drop the stuffs in my back pack including full blood bags for James.
“Where are you going?” he asks me silently.
