The next morning; 8:50 AM
Loud groans escaped my mouth as I stood up and warily made my way to the kitchen. A voice startled me. "You alright, honey?"
I turned around to see mom with coffee. She handed the cup to me. "Yeah. My legs hurt is all. Nothing big."
"Something wrong, mom?" Her gaze went to my neck. "What happened?" She touched the skin on my neck. I looked down to see light purple marks. Probably from last night.
"I'm-" she laughed. "It's alright. I like him. He's cute!" My hand scratched the soft surface of my neck as I softly chuckled. "But you know what he does, right?"
Her smile fell. "What? You know I don't care about criminals, you, my daughter, are one, so I still love you unconditionally." A giant weight lifted off my shoulders. "Scarecrow. Name ring a bell?"
She shook her head hesitantly. "No... Should it?" I nodded. "Basically, he's very fascinated with people's fears. And uses special toxins that make people see illusions of their fears."
She urged me to go on. "And Jonathan... is Scarecrow."
Mom looked taken back. "Did he test on you?!" I bit my lip. "Yes, but-" her expression changed to an angry one. "Why the hell are you still with him?! That's absolutely cruel!"
"But mom, I-" "No! No 'but's' Trisha Evangeline! What if he suddenly turns on you and he-" Now it was my turn to cut her off.
"I love him, mom! And he loves me back! Both sides of him love me. And yes, he did test on me, but he swore to me that he would never test his strong toxins on me, because he'd never ever kill me." Tears welled in my eyes and she nodded.
"And if you have a problem with our relationship, congratu-fucking-lations. You can make your way to the door, it's over there." I ran off to the bedroom, seeing Jonathan staring at the wall blankly.
"Morning." I faked smiled and sat beside him. "I heard it all." My hand snaked around his waist. "Don't listen to her, Jonathan. Remember what I told you? If she doesn't like you, she can hop right on the plane back to Metropolis, because her opinion doesn't matter."
"My work isn't cruel. It's what I thrive in. How is that bad, doing something I love?" I laid my head on his bare shoulder. "It's not." He nodded. "And the only reason why I tested on you is because I wanted to help you, that's what I try to do. Help people."
"I know. And you did. Remember the fears I had when I first met you? They're gone now. All thanks to you." We kissed passionately. "You're welcome, Trish."
Flashback.
"Tell me what you saw."
"I-I, dont want to say." He ran his hand down my arm and held my hand. "What are you-?"
"Just tell me. Alright? It's okay."
'I don't know. It's too personal... I guess it wouldn't hurt? He's being compassionate.'
"My dad. He used to beat me. That's what I saw." "Okay, so, you did better than any others. You didn't scream, you were calm and you hardly moved."
'That tells a lot.' 'Wow. He must do this on a daily basis. What dedication.' The bad voice in my head said the last remark sarcastically.
"Is that all?" He questioned. "Yes... I guess." "Okay. Just in case you fall out again I'll give you the antidote."
He put a needle in me and released the antidote in my neck. My vision cleared up even more and I didn't feel stiff.
"Doctor Crane?" "Trisha?" He sat in his own chair, across from me. "There's another thing I fear. It's worse than getting beaten by my dad. A lot worse." He looked intrigued but also careful to not step on unmarked territory.
"What is it?" Tears started to well in my eyes. "Being, um, raped." His eyes softened and he grabbed my hand. "Your dad?"
"Y-yes. That's why I don't talk a lot. Because I'm scared it'll happen again." "But why do you open up to me?"
'I don't want to say this... he'll kill me.' 'Oh what the heck. You're scared. Say it. It's not like he'll get away with it.'
"Because.... because, I'm afraid of you. I've heard the things they say about you and your experiments. And... Scarecrow.."
"Hey, hey, Trisha. I see the real you. You're really damaged. I don't want to hurt you or even kill you."
'He's right you know. Hell, you have two voices in your head. He's quite okay.'
"And call me Jonathan." He held out his hand for me to shake and I took it. "Thank you Jonathan. Will you help me overcome my fears?"
"That's what I'm here to do." I smiled and he kissed my cheek. I blushed furiously.
End of flashback.
"Well, she's gone." I laughed as my head peeked into the spare room. "Sad. She said I was cute. We could've bonded more." Jonathan frowned in mock sadness and I laughed again.
"She was wrong. About your work. I never thought I'd be so intrigued by 'pharma-psycho-cology' before." He chuckled at me. "You mean psychopharmacology?"
"Yeah, sure, whatever it is that you do. Science doesn't turn me on, but when you teach it, it does." His arms wrapped around my waist and mine instinctively went around his neck.
"It does, huh?" "Yep. A lot." He picked me up. "Well," he set me on the couch, climbing on top of me. "What else turns you on?" I stifled a moan and answered. "You taking off my clothes."
"Well, I think I can do that. Want me to?" I opened my mouth to answer, but I heard my phone ring from the bedroom. "Um, I should get that." He nodded and let me get up.
It turned out to be Harley. Oh god, what does she want? "Hello?" "Trisha, he's dead! You have to help me out of Arkham City!" I stepped out into the living room.
"Harls, slow down. Who?" "Mr. J, Trisha! He's gone and B-Man killed him! I know he did!" I rolled my eyes and handed the phone to Jonathan. I know he can shut her up.
"Harley, chill the hell out, alright? Trisha and I do not care, okay? I- Yes I know this is too soon, but you need to listen to me right now. Joker NEVER loved you. Literally EVERYONE but you knows he only loves HIMSELF."
I could hear her yelling from the phone. "And I don't know if Trish told you this before because she likes you a lot, but Joker tried to rape her. Or do you not care because you're THAT stupid and self involved? Yeah, okay, whatever."
He hung up and handed the phone to me. "Stupid bitch." I was pleasantly surprised. "Amazing. She won't be bothering me anymore, don't you think?"
He didn't answer, just shoved me against the wall. "Just let me take you against the wall, dammit." I chuckled and slammed my lips onto Jonathan's.
Turns out I'm in love with his angry side.
