Chapter Seven
Party Gone Wrong
Isaac's POV:
I pulled up to the pack house and parked my truck carefully, making sure nothing shifted around in the passenger seat as I did so. My one job for today had been to pick up the triple layered vanilla chocolate swirl cake that Dante had begged his mom to order for his birthday party. The flavor had been a surprising last minute change as Dante's favorite is vanilla but what the birthday boy wants, he gets. It had cost an extra $135 to have the last minute change accommodated but its not like it put a dent in my wallet so I shrugged it off.
I hop out of my truck and collect the cake from the front passenger seat before making my way into the pack house to deposit it onto the kitchen counter for mama bear's inspection. I heard a loud sqeueal just as I set the cake down and turned to have a small body slam into my legs.
Looking down into the gleaming eyes of my nephew I laughed," You nearly made me drop the cake little man. Your momma woulda skinned me alive."
"I could always use a new bathroom rug." Cassie laughed as she walked in with her arms full of decorations and tape stuck everywhere.
I lifted the box from her arms and nodded at the cake, "They were able to change it to the swirl. It cost a little extra but I think it looks fine."
"Yay!" Dante cheered with an excited smile, "Michie will be so happy! He told me it's his favorite."
"Oh, so that's why you wanted to have the swirl instead of just the vanilla. My sweet baby boy." Cassie cooed and pinched his cheeks.
"Lets go out back little man. Your mamma has some last minute work to do," I looked at Cassie and asked, "Anything you need me to do before guests start arriving?"
Without turning back toward me she answered, "Just make sure the warriors that at helping set up don't get into the food I have already set up. I know how they get. Oh and find that mate of mine and tell him to get the p-r-e-s-e-n-t-s from the closet."
I nodded even though she couldn't see me and grabbed Dante's hand, leading him through the house and out into the back yard.
The deck just off of the back of the house stretched along almost the entire length of the building. It housed three grills all being manned by pack members while various meats were grilled to perfection. Off of the deck was a series of small water games for the younger kids who couldn't quite keep up with the pack kids who grew at a faster rate. I also arranged for three bounce houses to be set up a little further out in the training field.
Several of my pack warriors were setting up the heavy wooden tables and benches that were used for pack gatherings while their wives directed them. They would pause and acknowledge me with a slight bow of the head as I passed by, double checking their work. Dante walked happily at my side chattering on about all of the games he was going to play with his friends.
"I hope Michie comes." Date sighed, pulling me out of my thoughts.
My eyebrows shot up and I asked, "Why wouldn't he be here? You said you are best friends right?"
He nodded but a thoughtful look crossed his face, one I had seen many times before on his dad as we were growing up.
He was quiet for a moment and I sat patiently waiting for his reply until finally, he answered quietly, "Michie said his Daddy sometimes has nightmares. He gets scared of people."
"Oh?" I asked, not entirely surprised after the information my pack members had been feeding me since the man and his son had arrived in our lands.
