The walls kept rising until they reached the ceiling, somehow, even that managed to magically disappear into the air.
Left, right and behind was hot hellfire orange sand as far as the eye could see. My brain wanted to run and get as far away from this cube of doom as possible, but my feet were buried deep in the sand and I was rooted.
Gerard was staring at the waves crashing infront of him. The waves managed to always retreat just inches away from his toes.
"Never seen the ocean before?" Dr Murphy asked while rolling up the hem of his pants.
I couldn't move my eyes from watching the waves crashing flawlessly infront of Gerard's toes.
A larger wave crashed on the shore and was obvious to reach Gerard's ankles. He took a couple of calm steps backwards.
"Its just ocean water." Dr Murphy pointed out as he stepped into it.
"No, really? I thought it was acid." Gerard murmured.
Dr Murphy looked up and for a second I thought he was walking over to hurt Gerard for his sarcastic comment, but instead he stopped a couple meters away from the both of us and folded his arms.
Gerard and I both looked at him wide-eyed, not knowing just how out of it this random man was.
"Hug it out."
"What?"
"I said hug it out. Hug Y/N"
" Why exactly?"
"You are tense and defensive because you're scared and feel alone in fighting the opposition that you've made of me. That goes for both of you."
I watched them throw sentences at eachother, each trying to get their way.
"Go on over Y/N, assure Gerard that there is no need for a fight response as there is nothing harmful that can happen to you two here. Not from me or my home."
I stared at him blankly, but obeyed and walked over to Gerard. He looked furious so I simply held onto his forearm, slightly hiding my face behind his shoulder in attempt to be out of Dr Murphy's stern stare.
"That's sweet Y/N, but I'm afraid we'll need a lot more oxytocin then that."
I looked up at him in a confused look.
"A happy hormone. It creates the feeling of belonging and safety. Since neither of you is willing to trust me just yet, at the very least you need to be able to feel like you can trust eachother."
I didn't hug Gerard but I did hold onto his arm alot tighter as the doctors voice got more aggressive.
"Last chance Y/N"
The way he made it sound threatening had me terrified.
He took a deep sigh and took out a white plastic slab with a single white button on top. The minute he pressed it all the sand and water surrounding us dropped and spilled below us.
Gerard and I were left balancing on a 50 by 50 centimetre square of slippery sand, the only way we could not fall into the deep pit underneath was to turn facing eachother, I grab Gerard's shoulders and he wraps his arms tightly around my torso.
Our hearts are beating like blenders and we're hyperventilating like crazy.
"Now, was that so hard?"
