“Jace, you wouldn't,” I gasp as he prepares himself for two weeks of detention.
“Oh my, live a little, Sam,” Jace cackles, reaching back to grab a zip tie.
“I just got back to school! I need you to be around to help me get around, not sitting in the principal's writing sentences about how you won't do something that you're clearly going to do again,” I say in one breath.
“Psh, you say that like I get caught every time I do something like this,” Jace laughs, grabbing his Febreeze bottle and positioning the zip tie around it. I sigh and give up. I asked for this, didn't I? Why am I having such a hard time letting him be himself again?
“Where's Kasen?” I ask, looking around at the empty hallway. Everyone is at lunch and I was planning to surprise my friends, but it appears they decided to go to lunch today. I guess I'll have to wait and see when they get back.
“He's with Collin,” Jace says. “They're both thrilled that you're back, but they are getting something to eat right now. They'll be back soon.”
“Okay. So where exactly are you throwing that?” I ask, positioning my crutches under my arms more comfortably.
“I have an ex girlfriend that I need to teach a lesson,” he says, standing up with his stinky weapon. I can't help but gasp and chuckle a little.
“Who?!” I ask him in surprise. I was already a little worried about whoever was getting their room “Febreezed” with a lavender smell mixed with vinegar, but to hear that it's going to be a girl, I feel some serious sympathy.
“Richelle,” he says. “I need to get revenge on Richelle.”
“Oh, snap. What did she do?”
“What didn't she do?” he replies, making a disgusted face. “She is a huge b-”
“Brat,” I say, substituting his naughty language.
“Yeah, I guess that works, too.”
“What happened?”
“She wanted me back and I told her absolutely not, so she's been spreading rumors that I...yeah with your friend, Hadley. I've got that rumor sorted out, but I'm about to teach her a lesson for messing with me and for messing with Hadley.”
“Do you...like Hadley?” I ask, raising my eyebrows.
“I plead the fifth,” he says, looking perfectly normal. Sometimes it's really hard to tell what he's thinking. “Now let's go teach her a lesson. Do you need me to give you a piggy back, or are you going to be able to hobble to the volleyball room?”
“A piggy back would honestly be nice,” I say. “I can hold everything.”
“Deal. Here,” he hands me the Febreeze and he helps me on his back. I hold the crutches horizontally in front of me and he jogs briskly to the fitness halls.
No wonder he has such toned abs...
It takes only a minute to get there and he carefully sets me down on my right foot so I don't hurt my left foot at all. I give him back his weapon and I get back on my crutches so I can go up to the door.
“Aren't you going to make sure they're in there?” I wonder.
“Oh, they're in there,” he says. “Kasen checked before he and Collin left.”
“You are so bad,” I say, shaking my head at him.
“They don't call me the bad boy for nothing,” he shrugs, smiling. He takes the Febreeze and quietly opens the door so they don't know that he's there. With one flip of the hand, he zipties the handle against the bottle so it will continuously spray and he throws it in there, pushing the door closed. In seconds, we hear a bunch of girls screaming and the door is thrown open. Jace picks me up and drags me behind a wall so they can't see us and I can't control my laughter. They're going to catch us for sure if I don't contain myself.
"Who would do something like that?” one girl says in a very upset voice.
“Oh my gosh, that smells so bad,” another girl says. She sounds like she's crying and that makes me laugh even harder. Jace is smiling like crazy, but he isn't laughing. He is good at controlling himself and for this reason he has to help me by putting his hand over my mouth while I stifle my laughter.
“I have my suspicions,” Richelle says in a very bratty voice.
“Who?” all the girls ask in desperation.
“Jace McFarland,” Richelle says. “He's probably jealous that I wouldn't take him back, so he's getting payback like he always does.”
I almost bolt for her on the spot, but Jace grabs me tightly and doesn't let me go. I can tell that he's ticked off by his expression, but his control is unfathomable.
“You wouldn't take him back?” a girl gasps. “Why not? Do you enjoy being soaked with this crap from sewer land?”
“Duh, no,” she snaps. “I wouldn't take him back because he's just so...bad.”
“What do you mean?” another girl asks. “I would take him. He's so hot, it's not even real. Those McFarland parents make beautiful babies. Sam is gorgeous as well.”
Beautiful babies?
“He's way too obsessed with her, though,” Richelle growls, unimpressed by what they're saying. At this point, I don't even care what Richelle has to lie about. I am still trying to hold my lunch down.
“I'm obsessed with my older brother,” the girls shrugs. “So what? It just means they have a really tight friendship. I wish all siblings were that tight.”
“Tori, stop this! You're not helping me!” Richelle shrieks.
“Everything isn't about you, Richelle,” a girl I recognize as Diane Ferry says. “You need to stop being such a drama queen. I bet it was the opposite. Jace probably wouldn't take you back. You're desperate enough.”
“I will get your sorry butt kicked off the volleyball team,” Richelle threatens.
“Coach wouldn't do that, Richelle. Sorry, but your argument is invalid. By the way, thanks for making Jace mad enough to do this. This is comparable to being sprayed with a skunk,” Diane retaliates. I want to give her a high five so badly. Jace is grinning like a madman as well.
“UGH! I hate you all!” she hollers, stomping off angrily. The rest of the girls glance at each other and start going back into the room. As soon as they open the door, I can smell the Febreeze and I want to die. It smells like the most horrible cleaning product ever.
Once the girls are out of the hallway, Jace lets me go and we give each other a high five. He looks so happy and it makes me glad that he got that off his chest. I follow him on my crutches as he walks away from the crime scene and it doesn't take any words between us to know exactly what each other is thinking.
Victory.
