I was woken up sometime at night, checking my watch is was only 1:25 a.m. I wanted to go back to bed when a pillow hits me in the head.
Oh yeah, I was woken up. "Bailey," I mumbled hugging my pillow tighter. Smack... smack. Smack, sma- "Stop it!" I grab the pillow and hit her back.
"Come on James, I have to show you something." I rubbed my eyes and then put my glasses on.
Oh, I wish I had my contacts.
She pulled me out of the bed and we sneaked out of the house. We jumped into the tractor, that Janica owned and Bailey surprisingly knew how to drive it. We stopped at a barn and climbed off.
Turns out that Bailey's foot is fine.
I still didn't know what we were doing here this time of the night. But with that wicked smile on her face, I knew we were up to trouble. She took out spray cans and started painting the walls. Well, spraying.
"Are we really doing this?" I whispered.
She only nodded and continued spraying, the way her hand moved so effortlessly told me that this wasn't the first time she did this. I had no clue what to paint.
So I just doodled. Random wiggles and emojis, to say the truth I sucked. But at least I had fun while doing so.
We were busy for about an hour when Bailey stepped back to look at her masterpiece.
And it was beautiful.
A field full of sunflowers with two kids running through it with their backs to us. They're running off into the sunset. "I want to be the one who walks in the sun." She whispered.
"It's... amazing," I whispered back.
"Thanks," she stares for a while. "An artist always signs his work," she handed me a black spray which I took.
JB
"Perfect, okay this isn't why I brought you here." She threw all the cans somewhere. She opened the barn, "This is why."
Inside there were a few chickens, two pigs, and four horses. I still didn't get it. I try to look amazed, which Bailey only rolled her eyes playfully. "A mini farm?" I try to sound elated.
"No silly," she giggled. She pets one of the horses and then climbs on it. "Come on, we don't have all day." I stared dumbfounded at the other three horses. There is no way I'm getting on one of them.
I have nothing against horses, I just don't like them.
When I was little, we used to go to petting zoos quite often. Let's just say it took a lot just to get me on the horse. And when I was finally on it, I didn't feel safe. I wasn't scared, it's that I am not very fond of them. I know some people adore their beauty, but I can't get past their stench.
That's just my opinion.
Moving on... now, how am I supposed to get on this th- oh it moved. What do I do? I was frozen in panic, "Calm down." Bailey whispered. "Wait, are you afraid?" I shook my head.
"Me, afraid? Of horses? No." She quirked an eyebrow up.
"Yeah sure, keep telling yourself that." I sighed in frustration.
"I'm not afraid, I just don't like them." I finally sat on top of the horse's back. I patted it. Don't you dare throw me off.
Bailey smiled, then nodded for me to follow her. Nice horsey. It slowly walked forwards. "Good job," I mumbled.
"What was that?" I shook my head.
She chuckled and then the horse took off running. Oh no, now I have to catch up. Slowly, easy horsey. I smiled, "I think you can go a little faster now, horsey." I was holding on for dear life.
That was until I relaxed a bit.
Bailey was throwing her hands in the air, her hair flowing behind her. "Kiddie up," I whispered to horsey.
And the chase was on.
We were running amongst the crops. Then a tiny dam. It was still a little dark, considering that it was only four in the morning. Oh yeah, why am I riding a horse at four in the morning?
Bailey, that's why.
I didn't realize we stopped until I saw a farmhouse. It looked pretty vacant if you ask me. Like it's been empty for a few years. No life.
"My mother lived here with her aunt, for a few years, after her parents died," Bailey whispered. "I've thought about moving here someday. Start farming, get married, have kids, and grow old." She sighed. "But life isn't that easy."
"I guess you come here a lot," I said sarcastically, trying to enlighten the mood.
"I do actually, ever since- I even came here before I got my license. The bus ain't that bad." She chuckled to herself. "Okay, enough about that. I have one last thing to show you."
I liked that she opened up to me. She normally hides everything, but she's showing so much about herself. I think she's the only person that knows so much about my life and me about hers. I'm like her new diary.
She jumped off her horse and I do the same. We walked until we were on top of the hill, but she quickly covered my eyes. "Sit," she ordered. I obey and try to sit down with her holding her hands on my face. "I want you to think about all the things you love."
Where is she going with this?
Running. Cooking. Dancing.
"Got them?" I nod. "Now I want you to think of all the things you love about yourself."
I- uh my hair? She could probably feel my frown, "I'm sure there is more than you know."
I like my cooking. I like my dimples.
"All the people you love."
My parents. My friends. My brother.
"The most beautiful thing you've ever experienced or seen."
A chocolate coo- a girl.
She removed her hands from my eyes. The sun was slowly starting to rise and with that a field full of sunflowers starting to wake.
It was... indescribable.
"Beautiful," I mumbled. Bailey nodded placing her head on my shoulder. I felt my eyes grow heavier with each passing second.
I just couldn't help but want more of the picture in front of me. But I couldn't hold on much longer, and before I knew it... I was asleep.
The last thing I saw before everything went black was the sunflowers and the flower next to me.
She just had to bloom.
