Hiding From the Dead: Chapter II
After a while, I stopped on the side of the street where I knew it was safe to catch a breath. Driving with Jayden in my arms was making me nervous, more than I already was. I touched his back which made him look at me. His brown eyes were filled with fear and his cheeks were pink and puffy from all the crying. I tried to keep calm, to not cry, and forced a smile.
"Hey, Jayden, baby. I brought some cans of food in my backpack. What if you go to the back seat and count them?" He nodded. "Yeah? You'll do that for me?" He nodded again, with a small smile on his lips, which actually made me smile. "Great."
After I helped him get in the backseat, I helped him with my backpack, which was too heavy for him. I started driving again looking for somewhere safe. I really hoped whatever was happening would stay only in the city. But something told me, it wasn't going to.
I shook the thought out of my head and focused on Jayden. It calmed me down the sound of his sweet voice saying: one, two, three...
"Bree. There are three cans of chicken, four of sausage and two cans of tuna." He said, putting them back on the backpack. I sighed in frustration.
"Okay, thank you." My voice was calmed, but inside I felt panicked. That isn't going to be enough. That isn't going to be enough! We have to find more food. Now!
I've traveled a couple of times outside of town, and I knew there was a 24-hour supermarket not too far from where I was. I had to get there before those things did.
After a couple of minutes, I took a turn in the parking lot. Lots of people were panicking. They were entering and exiting the supermarket without even paying. Whatever was happening, was probably already on the news and everyone and their mother had the same freaking idea.
I took another turn to the last row of the parking lot.
Fuck. No parking spaces. I parked the car in a yellow line, and if anyone said something, I would send them straight to hell.
"Come on Jayden." I hid the knife on my backpack because I was sure no security guard would even care to check my bag and we walked outside.
I took a shopping cart, in which Jayden hopped in and we went inside. Watching everyone acting like crazy was scary. I felt like I would get killed by a stampede of people walking in and out.
"Bree..." Jayden said, trembling, with fear in his soft voice. "What's going on?" I couldn't find the right words to explain what was going on. I couldn't even understand them myself.
"Everything's going to be okay." Was the only thing I managed to tell him.
There were only two gallons left of water and no food in the food isle. Fuck, fuck, fuck. I mentally cursed, not wanting to curse in front of Jayden.
"Breanna!" I heard my name from behind me. For a moment, I thought he wasn't talking to me, because I didn't recognize this person's voice. I looked back just in case.
"Liam?!"
Liam Morgan sat next to me in my Spanish class. We would always talk to each other when class was boring, and make fun of Mrs. Ramos because she looked like a zombie every morning... although... that's not funny anymore.
Liam was the most adorable kid in class. He had the most beautiful sky-blue eyes with a thin black line around them, light brown hair, brushed to the side and an adorable baby face, even though he was already 18.
He lived alone outside of town not too far from the supermarket. His mom died and he never met his father. That's why he was working there that night. And that's why he was wearing that horrendous uniform. He had a red shirt with the supermarket logo and long khaki pants that were too big for him.
